"British Tea Party" organises pro-cuts rally - May 14th

I wouldn't attend, because I don't buy the idea that vocal minorities should set policies when we have already expressed our views in elections (whether electoral reform, either of the voting system or of information requirements is needed is a different matter, or whether we need greater constitutional protection from the vagaries of popular opinion).

It will be interesting to see how much violence and destruction this causes compared to the previous anti-cuts protests of various guises if the turnout is high though...
 
I'm in favour of the cuts, but I wouldn't want to sign up to anything that is comparable to the frankly mental tea party in the states.
 
Saw this on the Taxpayers alliance website. If enough people go they're going to take the 'debt clock' too

A well mannered, polite rally for civilised people who don't wish to see their hard earned money being spent on pointless government initiatives and instead would like government spending to actually fall and our national debt to be cut.

We don't think that it's fair for us to continue borrowing money to live a lifestyle that we simply can't afford - burdening our children with unnecessary debt that they will have to pay back.

Any visits to Fortnum and Mason's by protestors will only be to marvel at their selection of quality goods and perhaps make the occasional purchase.

Bonfires will be strictly forbidden: it's out of season anyway

Trips to see Vodafone and other high street chains will result in congratulations to the company for providing jobs and growth in the UK.

It's obvious. The people who are pro-cuts are the people who rely on the state less because they have their own money, because they have made their own money, which requires a certain amount of conformity to do.

So yes, some 45 year old guy who has run a consultancy for 25 years is less likely to kick in a window than a 19 year old anarcist who hates the world and has little to lose ..

On saying that .. the 'tea parties' in the states are horribly racist and full of mentalists. And not of the channel 5 detective variety ..
 
Where is there any mention of the tea party on the TPA website? One of the organisers states:

This is not the Tea Party. It is sticking to the narrow issue of giving support to the principle of tackling the deficit swiftly to counter balance demand for the government to ease up on its programme. We do not specifically support the detail of the government's programme but merely the principle aim.

Except that 45 year old when he was 19 was probably exactly the same as the anarchist.

Student protesters rarely continue being anarchists or even anti-establishment when they grow up and enter the 'real' world.

Oooh, a debt clock - scary. Next the TPA will be telling us they can see Russia from their back garden.

Surely if they're going to congratulate Vodafone for being so awesome they should rename themselves the Tax Dodgers Alliance?

We'd all pay less tax if we could, and I don't really believe anyone who says otherwise. Vodafone can pay less tax because of our extremely permissive corporate tax regime, so they do. They'd be idiots if they didn't, and their shareholders wouldn't stand for it.
