Hey guys

I have an Asus Striker Extream with a Q6600 CPU, I have been doing a bit of research into getting the CPU to 3.2ghz however every post I have read on the web seems to come back saying that the Striker Extream isnt very good at overclocking the older quad core CPUs.

Anyone managed this on the Asus board? If so would you care to share your settings?

Cheers

Dave

The SE was a fun board.

The best thing I can say to you is just go for it. Go slowly and make sure you manage your temperatures, not only of your CPU but also of the North Bridge.

I would suggest finding out if your CPU can do the FSB required for 3.2GHz at a lower multi first. You will need a FSB of 400 and most ram will run at 800MHz so it is not too much to expect that your system will manage. Once you are sure that both your ram and CPU will cope them raise the multi back up to normal.

If you are a bit unsure of how to do this then read the guide that can be found sticky'd on the forum. Or simply use the Asus software that allows you to overclock in OS.

I had one of these a few years ago.

I had a Q6600 overclocked to 4GHz on water cooling so it can be done.

Unfortunately I don't have it any more so can't help with the settings.

hey guys

Just had a look at my BIOS.

Found the FSB multiplyer no problem, however I dont have a FSB stepper only a Rated FSB (QDR) this seems linked to the FSB as I know it but I am unable to tell what the ratio is.

Any ideas? 1069mhz = 266mhz

Yea your right. 266mhz x 4 = 1064.

So if your board is running a 9 multi you will need fsb of 1422.

Or on a 8 multi a fsb of 1600.

Those figures will see you to 3.2ghz but you may need to play with voltages to reach that oc.

What version of the striker is it by the way?? 790i 780i etc

Ahh right I get ya so the rated FSB is all 4 cores together?

Just tried it with 1.4v and 1600x8 and it didnt post. 1500x8 posted but locked up.

Its the 680i board (one of the early ones)

Ah right. Let the games begin then.

Ive heard of people using higher vcore as well!! It scares the life out of me mind.

What is your ram and what speed is it running at?

Yea the fsb is the 4 cores together.

So i take its an 8 multi?

Try getting it stable at 3ghz first.

Also what version of the 6600 is it? The G0 or the B3?

Unforyunately the 680i's were poor quad clockers, had an evga reference 680, (a1 revision), supposedly better suited to quads. Couldnt get any higher than 3.0ghz, no matter what i tried, same chip in a p45 board hit 3.8ghz with relative ease.

You will most certainly need a whole lot more voltage than 1.4 for your CPU mate. Which is why I suggested you take small steps and find your max FSB first before going for the 3.2GHz overclock. And as I said keep an eye on your temps.

I have got it to 2.8ghz with a multi of 9 and a 1250 FSB still at stock volts any more than this and she posts but locks up at the splash screen.

My Ram is running at 625 with 2.0v (need the voltage to run 4 sticks)

will run a stress test to see if its ok, running at 40c idle.

Much more difficult to overclock with 4 sticks of RAM.

When I got my Q6600 to 4GHz on the Striker Extreme I was using 2x2GB.

I think your main problem is your RAM settings.

Is it this stuff?:

http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-ddr2-pc2-8500-sli-ready-edition-dual-channel-eol.html

Two things:

1) You're running it at way over the rated speed. I assume by 625MHz you mean before this is doubled for DDR to 1,250MHZ. Stock speed is 1,066Mhz (533MHz before doubling).

2) You're not even giving it enough voltage to run at stock speed. It needs 2.1-2.3V.

Change your memory multiplier to reduce the speed of the RAM to closer to 1,066MHz (533Mhz before doubling) and give it more voltage if needed.

Thats the stuffs

Ahh ok never knew it needed so much juice no wonder why it didnt post when I put 4 sticks in to start with. Will give that ago next.

Just ran IBT and it made it through but running a but warm at 82c in places. When my 480 gets here tomorrow I will resit my cooler and clear out the years worth of cat fur and dust lol

Just looked at the RAM speed, the BIOS is saying its at 625mhz, this is sync'd to the FSB, the only other options I have is either 1:1, 3:2, 5:3 which makes it much higher.

When CPU-Z is open it shows the DRAM at 312Mhz (guessing its half what the BIOS Says as its DDR2)

If it helps the other settings are 5:4:4:15:18

In that case you're running the RAM at much lower than it's rated speed.

Your FSB is effectively 1250/4 = 312.5MHz

Your RAM at 1:1 is running at 312.5 x 2 (DDR) = 625MHz

If you set the divider to 5:3 the RAM would run at 312.5 x 5 / 3 = 520.83MHz doubled to 1.041.67MHz effective.

Complicated or what!

As you increase the FSB to overclock you'll need to play around with the memory divider to achieve an appropriate RAM speed.

Say you could increase the FSB to 1600 (400MHz effective) then you'd probably need to use the 5:4 divider. 400 x 5 / 4 = 500MHz (1,000MHz effective).

Clear as mud I'm sure.

Hmm had to drop my clock back down a bit as my CPU was getting rather toasty whilst playing eve. Got to 80c at one point!

Think this is a combination of really hot small office and poo old fan. Going to get a new cooler me thinks.

Its idle is high 50's on a stock clock!
