What would you do if you found a thief in your house?

A friend of my dad was recently in this situation.

He heard some noise downstairs while sleeping, so he ventured downstairs to the living room armed with a golf club. In there, he found 'a chav' stood holding his DVD player, about to run off with it.

The thief apparently said "please dont hit me, mate", and my dads friend hit one of his kneecaps with the golf club, immobilising him as you would imagine.

Upon arriving the police said that he was stupid to have hit him, and that he was lucky they weren't going to arrest him and charge him with assault :confused:

While I agree he may (depending on how you look at it) have been heavy handed, the guy could have been about to stab him or something, in these situations you just dont know.

So, have you (or someone you know) ever been in a situation like this? If not, what do you think you would do? I cant honestly say for myself unless I was in that situation.
 
Hit them with something, and claim they went for me, even if they didn't. Most likely the 5D cell maglite I have in my room, lol.
 
safety of my wife and children come first, i'd only get close enough to hit them if i really needed to, otherwise id be getting them out the door with whatever they currently have in their hands.

That's blatantly not legal. But, meh, the 'chav' shouldn't've been there.

I have various stuff around the house I could 'just about' grab hold of in a 'struggle' as he 'came right for me'.
 
I would nuke him from orbit, it's the only way to make sure.

Seriously though, if he threatened me I would probably pre-empt with something hard, not worried if it's sharp or blunt.

If not I would probably at least try to get him restrained for the police.

Bust most definitely make sure my family, or whoever else I'm staying with at the time would not be harmed as a consequence of my actions, that is the most important thing.

Been in one situation where thieving scum stole something and I putt a 14" kitchen knife through the back window of the pick-up they used to get away with. Scum in my house would get a similar reception.

idk, if you're telling it right it's difficult to stab someone with two hands full of a DVD player.

Secondly smacking someone on the kneecap does not affect one bit the ability of the robber to stab someone.

Honestly, I'd probably see red, start screaming "Who the **** do you think you are?!" and go for the bugger providing I had something to hand.

Can't say though, never been in such a situation. Can't say that I'll be willing to take the backfoot in my own home though.

That is true, but he could drop the DVD player and lunge at you with a knife.

He had him somewhat off-guard and chose to hit him as that is what he thought would minimise any risk towards himself.
 
Disable him at first, then gaffa tape his feet and hands and drag him into the cellar, then I would set about torturing him by cutting him deeply but in slow bleeding part of the body, then when he is begging for his life I would start pouring salt all over him. Then I would drag him upstairs and melt him down in the bath using some sort of acid, fish out his teeth and other various slow to decompose pieces of him and grind them down into a powder which I would then scatter in Cannock Chase.

Other than that I've not really thought about it.
 
If anyone was in my house (without permission) i would immobilise them as I don't know whether or not they could have a gun or not. I'm not risking my life

I thought it was ok to incapacitate a burglar as long as it fell within the "reasonable force" thing?

You wouldn't want to just say "ok, drop the DVD player and sod off" or hope that he's a nice chav and waits patiently for the police to arrive.
 
Tell him to lay down face first and call the police in that situation, but easier said than done. I'd probably panic and attack him in fear of him attacking me.

I wouldn't be that calm. If there was a stranger in my house i would hit first, ask later. I would also tie his hands with cable ties
