ok, well i have been playing my pc a lot now i have got my monitor and dont have to use the tv.
thing is though, i only really play the same old things :
FIFA11
NFS:Shift 2
NFS:Hot Pursuit
F1 2010
and recently i have really got into crysis.

as you can see, my main genres are football and racing. mainly because i have stuck to consoles in the past and these are the easiest to just pick up and play.

so, can you recommend me some games (not too pricey) that dont fall into these genres and will make my gaming experiences better.
i dont play for hours every day, so things like WoW and that are not really for me, i just cant be bothered with all that.

One thing that I would recommend to make your gaming experience better is to use real lifesis or Reli2.

Real Lifesis is a TOD (time of day) config that makes the game photorealistic. Reli2 is the sequel to real lifesis, but you cannot use it on previous saved games, you have to start a new game.

Simply installing a TOD will make your crysis experience so much better :)

EDIT: Also as above. Arkham Asylum rocks!

it makes all games look photo realistic, or just crysis?
do i just google real lifesis and there will be a link?

Fallout 3 GOTY
Batman Arkham Asylum
Resident Evil5
Lost Planet 2
Street Fighter 4
Dead Rising 2
Dead Space 1 + 2

Sorry, I should have been clearer, it's just for crysis.

Fallout 3 GOTY
Batman Arkham Asylum
Resident Evil5
Lost Planet 2
Street Fighter 4
Dead Rising 2
Dead Space 1 + 2

Fallout 3 - Had on 360, got lost when i got out of the vault
Batman AA - Do the video bits go on throughout the game or just the first bits as its explaining it all, as i got bored really quickly
RE5 - i remember that from my 360, was pretty good
LP2 - had LP on my PS3 and it was hard :(
SF4 - aint played SF in years
DR2 - not heard of it :(
DS 1 + 2 - again never heard of them :(

Borderlands, its simply underrated. i enjoyed every minute of it. (mix between a FPS and slight RPG feel)

/edit, just seen youve not heard of dead space, theyre very good too! :D

ok, one of the work experience guys used to play that a lot. looks kinda cartoony from what i remember?

can someone explain the difference in the genres. i get the obvious ones like sport, racing, simulator, first person shooter, platform. but what a RPG, RTS etc?

To me it sounds as if you are asking for a different genre to play that you have not done so before.

I think you should get some good old RTS action going.

Starcraft 2
Men of War / Assault Squad
Supreme Commander / Forged Alliance (Not 2, only the first one plus expansion)
Company of Heroes

Everyone seems to be giving him names of games that were available for Consoles anyway so...

rpg is role playing game, and rts is real time strategy.
borderlands is quite cartoony yes but its very well done, cell shaded i think like that old game, XIII if you can remember it.

/edit, dead space camera is fine :)

yeh, would be nice to play something that will do my pc justice as i read a lot that console ports are bad.

RTS (Real Time Strategy?) what exactly are they? im not too knowledgable about the different types. are the things like Command & Conquer?

Rome: Total War

Yes, its old - but its superb fun, and very different to the type of games you usually get on consoles.

If you like the idea of conquering the known world* with a bunch of Italian dudes around ~250BC, go for it :D

*Also, elephants are available. If you're rich.

ok, so this is how i see it after watching some vids :
FPS - well you see it as though its you
RTS - like fps but you see the people rather than through the persons eyes
RPG - things like C&C and that

does that sound about right?

youve got the last 2 mixed up :p
RTS is a top down view sort of affair, like C&C or Civilization etc.
RPG is somethign like the witcher, dragons age or mass effect.

you also have third person games, and thats where you look over the shoulder of your character, so batman arkham asylum and dead space come to mind :)

oh god, this is sooo confusing.
from the little bits i remember of C&C i dont think it was something i liked too much.
i have heard people saying how good witcher, DA and ME are, but i have never played them so i dont fully get what RPG is :(
third person games (pretty much the platform replacements?) seem to be more of what i think i would like. loved things like the first tomb raider, crash bandicoot etc (or do these fall into a different category again?).

RTS is C+C stuff. Real time strategy games. Command an army etc etc Not my thing but the Total war series and Starcraft 2 get high ratings.

RPG is role play games. It can be 1st person (through their eyes), 3rd person (from behind or over the shoulder) or top down (looking down from above). These games are usually heavily story based, you play as a character that you develop as the game goes on usually with stats and increasing your characters level (generally speaking anyway). Stand outs for me are Morrowind and the witcher for fantasy and Deus Ex, Knights of the old republic and Mass Effect 1 for sci fi setting. Vampire: Bloodlines is a good modern day vampire setting RPG if you patch it fully.

FPS - first person shooter, story can be good but is usually just a means to an end. Its primary focus is to shoot bad guys a lot with various weaponry and progress purely through violence pretty much. Some stand out examples for me are Half Life 2, Crysis (all 3), COD MW1+2 (MP mainly but the single player is quite cinematic and fun the first time through).

There is also the action/adventure genre aswell tbh. Games such as psychonauts, beyond good + evil and Batman: Arkham Asylum are good games of the genre. Usually involve puzzle solving, platform jumping along with a decent story to follow. All 3 I mentioned are very different from eachother and are worth a look into.

Something quite different would be stealth games, they have their own little niche nowadays. Games such as Thief 3, Splinter Cell (all but the latest) and Hitman: Blood money are standouts. Thief 3 is medieval/fantasy - bow and arrow hide in the shadows affair with some good voice acting and a decent story to follow. Splinter Cell is basically a modern version with more gadgets. Hitman has no shadows, its all about disguises and killing off your target as quietly and efficiently as you can. Fun can also be had in all 3 by just playing with your environments and trying different things out in the little open areas.
