I have a student account with HBOS, currently £1k overdrawn. However, I haven't finished uni. I'm still doing second year resits and will be returning to third year in September. I just got a letter saying they are terminating my account because they believe I am no longer a student and switching it to a daily fee current account overdraft. I will now be charged £1 per day, everyday overdrawn and I have no hope of paying it off because I'm still doing resits and only working part-time.

Any advice? This has shook me up pretty badly. I can't afford to pay it back right now.

Call in to your branch in person to speak with them about it. If that doesn't work I would seek advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

I'd post on a forum asking for help, then sit on my hands and mope.

No way I'd ring the bank or visit a branch with proof of my student status before anything snowballs.

No siree, bob.

Don't call the bank - chances are the people on the other end wont have the knowledge/power to do anything for you and you'll just waste 20 minutes of you life going round in circles and listening to hold music.

Pop into your local branch of the bank and ask to speak to one of their advisers/personal bankers and get it straightened out.

Phone the bank or preferably go into a branch with a letter from Uni proving you are a student. Had a similar issue when I decided to stay and do a PhD.

You should have access to a student status letter from your university. Print that out and give it to your bank as proof that you are still currently a student.

I imagine they are just assuming that you're in your third year at university and that you'll be graduating shortly. A very poor bank on their behalf, most banks i know change your undergraduate account to a postgraduate account which allows you to still have your overdraft for usually another year without having to pay the fees for being overdrawn.

Yer bud you have your priorities **** about face. Posting here before ringing the bank is pretty ******* dumb.

*EDIT* - and either your postman is damn late or you just got you lazy *** out of bed and found the letter. I am betting on the second one. Second year resits you say?

I can't quite put my finger on what you're to say, needs clarification?

so are you not getting a student loan or having money paid into the account ? if so you are probably going against the T&Cs of your account...

I wrote the post whilst listening to queue music on the phone to Halifax, apologies, should've said that.

The imbeciles at my branch haven't keyed in any end date for the course apparently so they've just terminated the account. I'll have to get proof from the university to continue the overdraft. However, as I'm essentially distance re-sitting.....Not attending classes and just submitting coursework/doing exams then I'm not sure what they can do or who I would go to?

Call the bank immediately and correct them, then get an official document from your department and take it to the bank to show that you're in education next year.

This happened to me =x

Also, speak to another bank and see if you can switch to them. Unfortunately this £1 a day overdraft now seems to be becoming standard. Halifax currently doing the same to me.

Registry. They can provide a letter.

post on a forum and bury your head in the sand.

works everytime garunteed! (do you ever wonder why so many people on this forum mention they have been declared bankrupt at one time or another?)

This happened to me and I got a status letter from the university and posted it to the bank. It all got sorted out pretty quickly.

As nydryl said, the registry should be able to give you some documentation that'll prove youre a student

Email/phone/go see your university administration dept - they will be able to give or send you a letter proving you are a current student with the university. Probably best to ring them or go see them, as this well get it sorted the quickest.

Then take this letter to the bank and show them you are still a student, should straighten it out.

I had to get this letter when I was on placement in order to prove I was exempt from council tax.
