so what would resident evil fall into then, action/adventure? i thought the 1st 2 of those were amazing, some random walking around shooting mixed with some mind boggling puzzles to solve.
im thinking i might have to give batman aa another go, maybe i was too hasty ditching it because of the stop start video clips.
i vagley remember a game (think it was the getaway or something) that was similar to GTA and based in london, that was awesome on the PS2.

So many games cross genres or try new things that I honestly hate trying to categorise them for description. Res series would fit mostly into the action adventure section but to be honest there are tons of horror games out there that it would probly be best putting those into their own category. Resi, Silent hill, Dead space, Amnesia etc etc.

If you like having wet underwear then I would recommend having a look at Amnesia, its first person perspective, has no guns, some nice physics based puzzles, its a hide and runaway from the random monsters type of thing. Dead space is probably more like the resi series if you liked those but in space. both games would be quite cheap now too. I would recommend having a look on youtube for videos of any of the games that you liek the sound of to get a bit of a feel for them.

Mafia 2 may be worth a look into if you like GTA, its a lot more story driven and theres less side missions but its beautiful to look at with a lot to explore set in the mafia style 1940-1960s I believe.

thanks for your input. horror games sound fun, but not being able to defend yourself sounds hard.
i only played GTA 3 with the new look, loved the 1st 2 with topdown view though.

Horror games are fun. Turn the lights off, sound up, on your own = brown trousers time. Amnesia is a novel one, the graphics are pretty good, the idea with the bad guys is to hide in rooms/cupboards and to keep in the darkness and to not look directly at them so they dont spot you. But at the same time you have to not stay in the darkness as it makes you go insane so you have to light torches etc to keep your sanity up. Some nice puzzles in it too. There arent that many bad guys so the puzzles and atmosphere make up the bulk of the game which make it so good for me.

Condemned would be another good one to try. First person beat em up. Very tense with some good scares. Dodgy tramps who you have to beat up with lead pipes. There are a few guns but the melee combat is a lot more satisfying using axes, bars, pipes etc to fight the evil tramps.

Vice city would be a good step for a better GTA, would recommend 4 but its a bit badly optimised and I didnt find it had the 'fun/humour' factor of the previous games which made them such classics.

thanks for everyones input. most of the games mentioned have demos on steam, so will be doing a lot of downloading ready for next week when i have time off :)

Fallout 3 - Had on 360, got lost when i got out of the vault

You're supposed to be lost :p Part of the fun is finding something you've never seen before :D

Dawn of War 2 might be a good choice. Should be able to pick up the original cheap now that Retribution is out.

Paradisac I have a spare copy of portal on steam if you want to try it.

that would be awesome :) although i havent used steam much so i dont really know how it works :( i just put in my codes for DiRt2 to and L4D2 and installed them, thats my knowledge of it.

are the demos on steam good representations for the actual game? i know the demos i got on the PSStore were generally nothing like the final game.

Depends on the game, theres nothing more you can say really. Indie games that have demo's are normally a good indication of the game though.

Post your steam name and I will add you to friends list and send it over.

paradisiac82 - wont be on steam til after 6 though (dunno if that makes a difference)
can you share steam games then as i never play DiRt2 or L4D2? sorry its all new to me.

You cant share games unless you buy them in a bundle and gift people the extra ones, I just had a free copy of Portal because they give you it when you pre order Portal 2.

oh right, so i cant give the games i dont play, but have redeemed the codes, to someone else?

To me it sounds as if you are asking for a different genre to play that you have not done so before.

I think you should get some good old RTS action going.

Starcraft 2
Men of War / Assault Squad
Supreme Commander / Forged Alliance (Not 2, only the first one plus expansion)
Company of Heroes

Everyone seems to be giving him names of games that were available for Consoles anyway so...

I second this.. was going to suggest the same thing. Strategy games are pretty sweet on PC you'll get many hours of enjoyment :p

I think Just Cause 2 would be just the game for you. Reason being that as you've stated that you just want a quick blast without getting too involved and without endless cutscenes (understandable), this fits the bill perfectly.

It's a FPS game with some of the best destruction effects you're likely to see and a lot of the possible combinations available will have you rolling about.

You're free to do whatever you like whenever you like, and go anywhere you like. And there's LOADS to do. Or you can follow a quite flimsy story when and if you feel like it. Your choice.

It's not meant to be realistic in the slightest, just a great fun game.

The graphics of the gigantic game world are breathtaking, and although a lot of people find it quite repetitive after a while, although they may be right, at the rate you seem to want to play, it could take months for you to reach that stage.

kool, and im sure i saw a 75% off thread for this game earlier too.

*attempts to log in to my community page to view Just Cause 2 achievements* damn you steamguard!

Steamcloud game too so you can activate it on steam after getting it cheap :p

had a quick look through the 'Under £4' section on steamstore and there are a lot of classic sega games. are these emulated or remakes?
