Why buy a convertible then keep the roof up ALL THE TIME?!

I spotted loads of people with their roof's up today, seems a waste really.

Had mine down quite a lot since i got the car in november
 
I've never had a convertible myself on the mainland but every single time I hire a car when away in sunnier climbs that's what I hire, including a couple of dozen trips to Jersey in very early spring or very late autumn.

I suspect its mainly women who have a change of heart and keep their roofs up. They love the idea of a convertible but then find, surprise, surprise, that it can actually blow their hair out of place....:eek:
 
Some cars are convertible only and are often bought because of the car they are rather than the fact they have no roof.

I mean from her point of view though, is she just trying to justify purchasing a convertable and use it as much as possible?

I can imagine driving during a thunderstorm being pretty cool as Firestar mentioned, but how often does that happen? Don't the seats smell fusty afterwards? I know they wouldn't get soaked during a light shower as the rain just goes straight over the top with the wind, but what about when you stop at a junction?:p
 
I imagine they would smell a bit. I remember when my first wife's mother bought a new Mk1 Honda Prelude with electric sunroof the day before a heavy snowfall. Got into it and being new to it she hit the roof button in error. I recall that car smelling musty for months and that was a brand new car.:eek:
 
Not had the roof up at all on the mx5 so far this week! Been far too lovely to have it up, especially today :D

Roof up sometimes for me under the following circumstances:

- taking shortcuts through some bad Middlesbrough Council Estates
- commuting home from a very hard and stressful day at work when I CBA
- when it is very windy (the Elise needs every element of aerodynamics and downforce it can get since it is so light)
- when driving at speed (80MPH+)
- when eco driving (to save fuel - minimises drag, saving fuel)
 
If I had bought something like an MX5, I doubt the roof would ever be up - I've always been the kind of person that would dress warm and have the roof down whatever the weather, and seeing as my car lives in the garage, there is literally no reason to have it up ever.

On the subject of parking, I recall a friend with an Elise mentioning that he left it unlocked all of the time to avoid people slashing the roof to look for stuff to steal.
 
When I had the S2000 roof was down at every possible chance... Heaters in the car were basically as hot as any nuclear reaction known to man, so even in the middle of december with snow on the ground I'd have the roof down.

Best drives I remember were night time drives back to Cheltenham from London. Once you got past the dual carridgeways at Oxford and onto the single carridgeway sections of the A40, hooning along there with the roof down, VTEC echoing through the forest... was absolutely beyond incredible, especially with a starlight backdrop...
 
Reminded me, at the weekend there was some pretty heavy rain that came on around 1-2pm over brumingham, Im usually pretty brave about weather on the roads but it was coming down really hard and the motorway back to warwick was decidedly iffy.. i wasnt even swearing at the people in front of me for dropping to only 40-50mph

As i get to my exit im out from under the cloud and its actually fairly sunny, i pull off the motorway and around a roundabout that goes underneath it to my exit, where i see a TVR driver with the top down... getting on the motorway in the direction of brum :)

What id have done to have seen that TVR and its very wet driver when it got wherever it was going
