Where does my card stand 1 year on (5870)..

Last xmas? You sure you don't mean last last xmas?

This gen haven't moved forward much, as 6950 is roughly on par with 5870 but with better tessellation performance and scaling in games like Crysis and Metro2033. 6970 is a bit faster (and most 6950 2GB can bios flash to become a 6970 2GB).

If you wonder if it is worth spend another £300 again on this gen card moving from the 5870, the the answer is no...as the performance increase is too little to justify the cost.

Save you cash till toward the end of the year, and get the new 28nm process GPU cards instead. Should be cooler running, lower power consumption and quite a bit faster than the current range of 40nm process GPU cards.

I'm loving my XFX5870, delivered this Monday.. replaces my old X1950Pro.

It fully works, no glitches, artifacts, crashing or stuttering. Very a happy man.

I don't want to OC, because lets face it, it's already comes heavily overclocked at stock. Like Marine-RX179 says, a 5870 is very slightly below a 6950 in performance... It will last me 2 years and if it doesn't then I got an OCuk warranty as back-up.

Take would take his advise, he seems to know his stuff.

On a 5870 here as well. I was also thinking about upgrades but tbh my PC is playing everything I want it to play with out issue at the moment. So the question is what are you playing that struggles that you are willing to upgrade for?

Unless a must have system killer comes out in the next few months I can't see myself upgrading. My plan at the moment is to wait and see what BF3 needs and what new kit is out at the time.

Yep.

My 5870 has maxed all games I'v thrown at it at 1920x1200 max settings with the exception of Metro, which i still played at 1920x1200 all settings highest except for MSAA off and DEP off.

The gap between generations seems to have been getting smaller of late. I seem to find myself upgrading every 2 gens rather than 1.
You have to remember that one of the main reason why this gen's cards haven't really moved forward much is because the GPU are still stucked on 40nm...with the 32nm being skipped.

Simply put, this gen cards is not as fast as it could have been, comparing to if it was released with 32nm GPUs.

Im on a 5870 and it still handles everything I throw at it just fine - even on 3 screen eyefinity.

Games aren't really going forward that much due to consoles holding them back, so I can't see there being that big-a need to upgrade any time soon.

Which is why ATI/AMD and Nvidia introduced Eyefinity and Nvidia Surround- trying to convince the customers using 3 monitors to game is a cool thing to have.

With 3 monitors to push, people would need more powerful card(s).

I wouldnt bother upgrading from that this generation to be honest. The only single GPU card that you will see significant gains on would be a 580gtx.

Probably worth waiting for Q4 2011/Q1 2012 when the new stuff is due out.

From very loose benchmarks Iv been looking at, the 5870 is on par with the 6950 ~ and about 15-20% slower than the 6970.

So its a card with a long life ahead of it still.

I love mine HD5870- had all my games maxed out: COD:MW2 online, Dead Space 2, ASSSASSINS CREED: Brotherhood, Dragon Age...

However today got my hands on GTX480- played Crysis 2 all maxed out, difference in performance I would say huge,..GTX480 so much smoother on Maxed out settings!

Same with AC: Brotherhood, FPS never goes under 50,..with HD5870 sometimes it drops to 32fps...

later will try couple more games!

I just sold my Sapphire 5870 for £150 :) Replaced it with the Gigabyte 480GTX SE, only cost me £50 to change.
Am I glad I did ? Yes, the 480 runs a little cooler than my 5870 did, its quieter and gives better performance in most games I play.

I was talking about GTX480SE too...

Only played Crysis2 today and AC:brotherhood... in both game better performance, especially in crysis 2

Now decision- which put on sale, which leave in me PC!

its never usually worth upgrading when u have a top previous generation card

the improvement in performances is never worth the cost.

if u get for a top of range card for the current generation, its best to skip a generation before upgrading
