Why buy a convertible then keep the roof up ALL THE TIME?!

This behaviour totally baffles me as well, why buy a convertible if you're not going to put the top down? You buy a convertible with the idea of putting the top down surely?

Oh, and night driving with the top down is epic :D.

when i had th mx-5 I only ever had the top up when the misses was in the car and she didn't want her hair being messed up.

Well that and when it was raining and I was in traffic (under ~20mph and you get wet...)

There do seem to be a lot of people who don't like getting their hair messed up, I can understand that on the way to work for example when wearing a hat isn't going to work very well...

If a convertible is your daily drive it's sometimes nice to change the whole character of the car via the roof.

I've been having roof down since mid February. I would have roof off nearly every dry day if I had something like a S2000. I'll accept 'because it is cold' as an excuse in December and January when you are shivering with the roof up and 'heater' on full. Spring Summer and first half of autumn it is too hot in the car to not have roof down or at least windows open.

- taking shortcuts through some bad Middlesbrough Council Estates

Drive faster then. No reason to have the roof up.

commuting home from a very hard and stressful day at work when I CBA

Roof down after a stressful day is brilliant. I'll be smiling the second I start my car in the work car park I'll be grinning all the way round it and as soon as I'm on the open road I've forgotten all about work.

- when it is very windy (the Elise needs every element of aerodynamics and downforce it can get since it is so light)

Downforce doesn't matter when going normal legal speeds. Drive a bit slower if you are that concerned.

when driving at speed (80MPH+)

Doesn't matter, they have the aerodynamics of a parachute anyway, might as well enjoy it.

when eco driving (to save fuel - minimises drag, saving fuel)

The only time this is applicable when you want to try and do a journey in one tank that is cutting it too close. Stupid tiny fuel tank... Even then I'd rather fill up and have roof down.

They are all wrong, and anyone driving a convertible today with the roof up, unless they were travelling at speed on a motorway or dual carriageway, fails hard.

Roof down with windows up if you are worried about noise.

I recently bought a convertable. I was wondering, do fellow owners always put the roof back up when parked at work, or out shopping etc?

Depends where I'm parking the car. At Waitrose for a lightening quick shop, no. At work I'll leave it there all day with the roof off. Southend High street, no chance.

I really dont understand this.

Why do people care so much about what others do or dont do?

Does it honestly cause people so much anger just to see a soft top with the roof up?

Is this really what people spend their lives worrying about?

Who cares???

For all anyone knows, they might drive with it down frequently, and its just chance you see it down and rage, or they might take their soft tops on holiday to somewhere warm in the summer and they enjoy it then. Or perhaps they got a soft top so that they can fit tall plants and trees in from the garden centre.

I find it quite bizarre that what other people choose to do with their own money which has no impact on anyone else can cause so much consternation.

What gives you the right to judge others in this manner though?

Your post contradicts your sig...

When did I say it was me? I can respect other peoples views rather than point 'OMG hes got his roof up'

Personally I can never be arsed on the way to work as its a dull drive. The way home is through country lanes with no one else about - so that's where the roof comes down.

Roof Always Down. Although I was always dashing out the office to put my roof up during the usual northern summer storm while it was parked.

I moan every year about this subject, but I'm happy to report that my local drop top owners have actually grown a set this year and are using their cars to the full potential they were designed for.

Bravo East Lancashire, it's about damned time!

Well said lol, This thread is kinda on the same lines as people who buy 4x4's and never go off road, or people who buy super cars and never go to the track.

See this sort of logic is all well and good until you realise you're spent your time posting in a thread about the subject and thus care about what we think.

Kind of ironic really.

Personally, there are days where I just don't feel like it even when the weather is decent. Also if there are loads of people about when I get in the car, I can feel a little conscious of drawing unwanted attention to myself so leave it up. But usually if the weather is nice then it's down :)

Personally I was searching for a reason, any reason, to take the boxster out when I got home from work last night. With my last four cars being cabriolets it is true that you do have to give up quite a lot in terms of boot space, visability etc to own one. As far as I can tell the upside is that on any half decent day having the roof down makes owning one worthwhile.

There will follow lots of posts by people trying to justify this sort of behaviour. Some will suggest it is up to the owner to do as they please. Others will suggest all manner of reasons why this might be acceptable.

up north the suns out but it feels cold and its quite windy!

i'd keep the roof down if i had a convertible!

Roof nearly always down here too.

Only time I'd have the roof up on a nice day is for a long motorway journey - loads quieter and about +4 mpg.

I've only been driving to/from work lately and so the roof has stayed up (it has been overcast/raining for the last few days and couldn't be arsed with the faff of the roof when I got to the office).

Other trips, roof = down.

I've had mine down a few times in the MX5 but travelling at speed (80+) with it down can be a tad annoying! Plus I don't want to mess my cool hair style up! :p;)
