Why buy a convertible then keep the roof up ALL THE TIME?!

Roof has been down at every opportunity since Feb, can't get enough of it. Night driving, roof down action is awesome too. :)

likewise! love night / snow driving with the roof down as well. Its awesome. Lots of people at my work have convertibles and never have the roof down. Dont understand it either!

I recently bought a convertable. I was wondering, do fellow owners always put the roof back up when parked at work, or out shopping etc?

Leave it off. I keep anything of value locked in the glovebox, and why bother putting it up? if someone wants to get into the car, they can just knife the roof! leave it down as often as possible.

This is a personal favourite. After tennis, it's a disappointingly short drive back, but its so good.

Gotta be careful though, driving along looking at the stars is not something I would advise.

Mine always goes back up. Only if I am in constant close view of it does it stay down.

I don't like leaving mine anywhere with the roof down for any length of time. Too many jealous chavvy types likely to spit in it or worse! If I'm just nipping into the shop to pick up some milk or something then it stays down but not unattended for any length of time.

Thats disgusting.

Where on earth was that?

I must admit, normally I would be shocked, but then I reminded myself that this is Britain after all.....

Why cant anyone have nice stuff anymore, for fear of some foul, chav or feral scum doing something to it?

I have the roof up most of the time during the week on my commute as it's mainly motorway, so I just dont bother. Yesterday however the roof came down as it was still hot and sunny as I left work, so 15 minutes on the motorway wasnt a concern :D

I tend to always put the roof up when parking anywhere, unless the car will remain in sight or Im on someone's drive. Aside from that, and the aforementioned ocmmute, I will try and have the roof down as often as possible. It's a much more pleasureable drive.

Oh, and yes, night driving with no roof...not a lot beats it :)

No rain? Roof down. I wont put it up if it starts raining unless it's going to get the interior wet. Light rain is a non issue. On the motorway above 60MPH no need to put it up if it starts raining anything less than tropical.

If I want to listen to music above 80MPH then the windows go up, but that's all that is needed.

I will drop the roof before starting the engine also, especially in places with great acoustics for exhaust note. Got to make the most of it :D

Over the west end some idiot on one of those bus tours dropped it on them, if it wasnt me daughter i'd laugh to be honest :D

On a serious buy slightly silly note:

I am quite tall and thus my head seems to be high enough for the top of my head to be completely in the flow of air coming off the windscreen (the top of the screen is almost eye level for me if I dont slouch in the seat!). At normal speeds this is fine but when pressing on it is a pain in the arse... do you tall guys wear a hat to combat this?

Slouch down a bit :)

Or do the gangster lean.

Put lower profile seat rails in. ;)

I am not quite as exposed as you sound to be but a drop of an inch or so would still remove me more from the buffeting. Considering putting lower rails in the S.

When I had my MR2 and likewise been replicated a few times to several Lotus owners, people have flicked burning cigarettes and litter (even had reports of spit and bags of dog crap) into Lotuses - whether they are on the move or not (parked up, or sat in traffic).

Not quite as bad as a burning cigarette but i've had someone empty their ash tray out the window which just so happened to spray all over my car, in my blowers and in my face. I had to pull over to avoid having an accident as I couldn't see for the crap in my eyes.

An ex-local Lotus owner went over the Newport Bridge and (it was never proven) but he saw some Gypsies ahead of him. Mysteriously when he went past them, a wrench bounced off his front clam shell, hit the window several times, wrecking it, then bounced over the windscreen, into the passenger cell and shattered the rear window inches away from his face. You can't tell me that wouldn't have hurt like hell if it was a few inches to the right.

There's always scum around. My philosophy is to get past them as fast as possible

I only ever found four reasons to have the roof up on my old MX5:
- Such a short journey that I can't be bothered (e.g. under 2 miles to the local Tesco)
- Very cold weather, and that was because the manual recommends that you get the roof upto 5 degrees before opening it to prevent cracking. So heater on for 10 mins, THEN drop it
- Rain
- Fog. Now that is seriously cold stuff. I've driven in freezing fog across Wales on a Xmas day. Hell of an experience, but really not recommended, even with a wooly hat on

Even snow can be dealt with, as it falls slower than rain. So you only need to be travelling above walking pace, and it'll get swept over the top.

Roof down is over rated. BIG style. It also slows you down.
