Hi chaps

Will my Gigabyte GTX 560 OC be ok for 3D at 1080P?

I'm looking to upgrade my monitor as i'm currently gaming at 1680 which the 560 is perfect for at max settings, i'm willing to knock the AA down a bit at 1080P so i'm sure it will be fine in 2D at 1080P but I quite fancy a 120hz monitor and trying 3D as I have not experianced it yet, i'm waiting for the new Samsungs to come out

Thanks

I think most 3D profiles recommend that you turn shadows off. Not sure about this, but without shadows i bet your 560 can handle any game. But an easy way for you to figure htis out yourself is to try the games you play and see if you can get at least 50-60 FPS minimum. If your 560 can manage that then in 3D vision you'd have at least 25-30 fps worst case.

There was a similar thread to this a week or so ago, wondering about 3d and the 560. It seems that in order to get 3d running properly for a 560 at 1080p, you're going to have to turn down some graphics options for some games. For example, on a 560 bad company 2 runs at 50-60fps at 1080p at max (no aa). 3d cuts the fps in half (one half going to each eye), so you're looking at less than 30fps when the action starts heating up, which will result in noticeable slowdown. It's under 30fps when the slowdown starts getting noticeable. Of course, this depends on the technical requirements of the games you are playing at the moment. What games do you play?

I found the 3D with NV to be pretty poor when i tried it out in an American store that has come to the UK.
To be fair, the glasses did keep falling off which may not have helped ;)

I have a Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC. Runs 3D at 1920 x 1080 no probs. Some games turn AA of but you should need it with 3D anyway.

What games do you play?

Most high end titles, just finished Crysis 2, Mafia 2, getting Shift 2 and Assasins Creed Brotherhood next week

Its good to know the card will perfom well in 2D @ 1080P as for the 3D then what i'm being told is what I expected really, I dont mind turning AA off for 3D

The problem is, I dont know if its worth spending the extra for a 120HZ monitor but I dont want to be using VSYNC however I dont know if the 560 will take advantage of a 120HZ monitor at 1080P, I know it wont in 3D which is fine but can you see my dilemma?

Not sure about Crysis 2 or Shift 2 I'm afraid :(, but Mafia 2 likes Nvidia hardware, so it should run ok in 3d. Assassin's creed has quite low minimum framerates though (64fps on a gtx570, the 560 will most likely hit below 60fps due to a smaller framebuffer), so you might experience slowdown on ACB when a lot is happening.

That said, I have ACB on console where you experience dips below 30fps quite a bit and it doesn't really detract from the game.

With regards to the monitor, it's completely up to you mate, if you want to spend the extra cash for the faster refresh rate go for it! Personally I wouldn't, but that's because 3d gives me motion sickness (think: "I just chundered everywhar"). When watching Saw 3d in the Cinema, I almost threw up over the couple sat in the row in front! :(
