Wow, so this is how much we value the planet?

Now,

I am not a big fan of the way that man feels the need to destroy nature, but when you see what we have done to the planet in some places, I have to wonder what is the point of having so many people, and continuing to chop down beautiful forests that have been standing for thousands of years for THIS.................

I find that pretty shocking that most likely that site had animals and nature in all its glory, and man turned it into a dreadful, wasteland not fit for rats, nevermind humans.

Possibly the worst slum I have ever seen, has anyone seen worse than that?

Yup that's bad. I've seen worse pics of the Chinese chemical plants. You wouldn't believe the amount of crap they dump into surrounding countryside

How on earth can the international community let China get away with that?

The international community has no power against someone like China. They have, and will continue to do, whatever is in their best interest.

And whilst China does make an awful lot of cheap tat, they also produce high end products such as iPods etc. In fact, I'd go to say there's nothing that China doesn't make any more

You can watch a video called Earthlings too that is free online via their website.

Another disgusting look at how humans act.

I recently had a big argument with someone at work over the following question "If you had to wipe out all the humans or all the animals which would you pick?". He was outrage I picked to wipe out the human race because according to him, we are so much more important.

Don't get me wrong, I am not some hippy idealist, I drive to the supermarket 5 mins down the road, waste things, leave PC's runnings etc but at the same time, I can see, that despite all the good that is being done, the majority of the human race is just a dirty virus.

the majority of the human race is just a dirty virus.

Essentially all animals on Earth are a virus though. Do you realise how destructive elephants are to their local habitat?

We're just the most effective virus :p

I still think humanity will eventually triumph through the use of science though. Or maybe not, maybe we'll just rape this planet for all it has, then move some where else!

So THATS why they can produce so much cheap, utter tat. No care whatsoever about cleaning up the horrific mess, as long as some plastic toys for some western idiots Christmas crackers are knocked out in their billions.

:(

Who made the components for the computer you're using and what do you think their "green" policies are?

It's easy to read these articles and tut but just because this isn't happening on our doorstep doesn't mean that we aren't all benefiting from it.

To quote Jonas Salk:

"If all the insects were to disappear from the earth, within 50 years all life on earth would end. If all human beings disappeared from the earth, within 50 years all forms of life would flourish."

Although I agree that it is an excellent film, I can't agree with the rest of your post.

We are though. The sheer fact that we are capable of studying the way our planet works and striving to prevent occurrences that would damage our environment means that we are more important - we are the only ones that can actively prevent "bad" things happening. Other animals simply get on with their lives and what seems like a balanced, fair world is in fact just organised chaos, where creatures are constantly competing to survive against very tough adversaries. They do everything they can to survive, and that's it. Don't think for one second that they care about their environment - it's just that they lack the capability to damage it, and crucially lack the ability to make decisions to improve it.

despite all the good that is being done, the majority of the human race is just a dirty virus.

It's become pretty trendy to say this, however we aren't really special. If any of the other creature had the means to do what we do, with such a free reign, of course they would take it! The animals are only different because they aren't capable of consuming resources at the incredible rate we do, sustaining the enormous conflicts that we create, or producing anything like the scale of harmful waste that we do. If they could, they would.

If it's any consolation, I don't think the planet cares.

Also, to the idea that "humans are a virus", we are all that really matters, a universe without beings intelligent enough to try and understand it is pointless.

To be fair, should one hypothetically wipe out all the non-human animals the remaining humans wouldn't last long anyway. Ecosystems are pretty important. :p

Regarding the OP, it really is saddening what we do to the planet. Hopefully it'll be much better (rather than much worse) in 100 years. :/
