Hey when im playing Rift on ultra or even low settings my EVGA GTX 460 graphix card goes to 100c is this rely bad or is that ok ? i have a coolermaster cm 690 II case ??

worried that my graphix card might break

thx

Uhm, it's not brilliant. What's the fan set-up? Have you cleaned the fans, filters and the GPU cooler recently? Is it overclocked? Is there some card in the next PCI slot down from the GPU potentially blocking airflow? Is the GPU fan spinning? And so on.

But yeah, I'd stop playing games until you've figured out what this could be...

+1 at those sort of temps you card will not last long, best have a look at it. Especially if it goes to those sort of temps in a game normally your need furmark or similiar to get a graphics card into triple figures! With suitable case cooling you should be looking at 80 max under heavy load.

There is no other gpu blocking airflow. It's not overclocked iv had the case for a few months and im using the fans it came with. but iv not cleaned anything since iv got it

Seems like your fan is not spinning faster as the gpu gets hotter. Onl way to test it bu using a program like MSI afterburner and clicking on the "Auto" button and adjusting the slider to increase the fan speed.
Or use a custom fan profile.

I've never used MSI afterburner and iv never overclocked anything before or done anything with fan speeds etc
Time to start using it then :P

But even if I keep my fan at 40C doubt it will rise to 100. Then again mine is DirectCU. It's most likely not a case problem (unless you decided to shove random cables in there to block everything). my case is a mere CM Elite 335.

maybe the thermal paste on teh CPU cooler came off slightly or something... max safe junction temperature for silicon is something like 150C+ but at 100+ the electronic properties (like electron/hole mobility) of the semiconductor begins to vary quite a bit so what is safe for the substrate may not be safe for the chip. You may start seeing the chip increasingly throw errors if it goes any higher.

Does this only happen during Rift or other games too?

Can we get some pictures of your case? The fan not going higher than 40% (which is pretty much idle speed) is worrying though, time to use Afterburner's in-built fan profiling.

I tried mine forcing the fan at 40% speed constant and ran Kombustor. I still peak at around 55 C. You most likely need to reapply paste and fix the cooler again
