An AMD Gaffe Has AIBs Ship Radeon HD 6790 with Too Many ROPs.

I guess somebody's packing their bags over at AMD.:p

This is great news to the end user though.

'A possible miscommunication between AMD and its foundry or board partners saw some, if not all partners ship AMD Radeon HD 6790 graphics cards with more ROPs enabled than specified. The HD 6790 SKU is originally specified to have 16 of the 32 ROPs on the 40 nm Barts GPU enabled, however, batches of GPUs shipped have 24 out of 32 ROPs enabled. While not a bad thing for the user at all (since the GPU ends up with more geometry crunching power at its disposal), it has AMD red faced, as it disturbs the product lineup.'

nice. We know this is designed to compete with (and beat) the GTX550, but where does this extra load of ROPs put it performance wise?

You think this was done by accident? Come on how else to create buzz and interest in a product, they been at these tricks a couple of years now.

Identify the incorrect boards, package them as 6790 Limited Edition, whack 25% on the RRP and sell them on.

problem AMD?

Wouldn't those cards need to have a BIOS to take advantage of those ROPS. Making this a software issue rather than Hardware.

... there is very little reason to believe that this move was purposeful

AMD would have marketed the 6790 as a more powerful card, if they had intended to increase the ROP's in the original *planned* design
... It would have given them more reason to boast of its increased performance over the gtx 550
