Why buy a convertible then keep the roof up ALL THE TIME?!

What do you think wasn't 'right' for having the top down about todays weather, with no wind, highs of 22c and not a cloud in the sky then?

Exactly what weather do you think the people who didnt bother are waiting for?
It was cold, wet and windy here today :p

Its literally impossible to have a discussion with someone who is so incredibly belligerent that they think every single soft top driver is wrong, apart from them.

Its an astounding position to take.

You mean you can't hold a discussion with somebody who has a different opinion to yours ?

It's not like fox is the only person to think this. There are plenty of people who hold opinions on both sides of the fence. You're just throwing your toys out of the pram.

Surely your biggest beef is with the OP, who felt so strongly about it he started a thread on an internet forum.

I'm just adding my opinion to said thread! This thread would have no replies in it if nobody was allowed an opinion on the use of a soft top when its sunny, surely

I note you've not answered my question.

Get over yourself, nobody said "obligatory". Perhaps you are not the type of person I was aiming this thread at, that's fine... no need to be so defensive . But there ARE people who don't drop the roof, ever. Usually people who buy A4, Saab 9-5 and the like cab's but the odd person with a "sportier" car does also occur. All I'm saying is if you don't want the roof down, why buy the convertible version of a car which also comes in a hard roof version? There are literally no advantages to doing this in 99.9% of cases .

Why do you get needled because someone chooses to purchase a drop-head but doesn't take advantage of dropping the roof on sunny days?

To you, it might seem a waste of a perfectly good motor and fair enough, that's your view but, I'm sure the people who own drop-heads, didn't purchase the vehicle in order to drive around with the head up, just so they could wind you up!
It is their money and their choice so, I'd suggest that you get over yourself and let others choose what they want to do!
If they don't wish to drop the head then as far as I'm concerned , it's ok by me!

I usually have the roof down unless it is raining and/or cold unless sunny. Doing normal motorway speeds with the top down is not a problem, provided that it is sunny. Even a short summer rain shower isn't bad, provided that you keep it above 50 or so.

I think you over-estimate how much it "annoys" me that they do it. I posted a thread on a computer forum, that's all :p.

Clearly I'm not the only one of the same opinion!

Oh and to the pedant about the 9-5, it's a 9-3 and a convertible.. I'm not too knowledgeable about Saab's and it didn't seem worth the effort to check... though I did now, just for you! ;) .

Actually, I can probably answer you on that one...it's turbulence!

My old Z3 doesn't have any wind deflectors and it gets mighty draughty with the head dropped above about 20mph due to turbulence and unless it's very warm weather, you soon get chilled so I can see why some people might not drop the head if it suffers like the Z3 does!

I'm now on the lookout or either a new or s/h deflector setup which will get rid of the turbulence and make it more comfortable to drive with the lid down.

Motorways are crap with the roof down. Noise, wind and sunburn.

Is there that much difference between driving at 60 on an A-road and 70 on the motorway?

I love the idea of a convertible but always talk myself out of it. One reason being that to get anywhere from my house you end up doing about 20 miles of 70mph dual carriageway.

I guess I could do the 3 miles to the dual carriageway, stop and put the roof up then put it down again for the last few miles of my journey but that seems kind of pointless!

3 miles is fine, plus you get some decent scenary. 100miles on a motorway is not fun!

Ah I get ya.

I tried the "skydome" roof on our Grande Punto the other week and it was awful over 40mph. You just got a pulsing *bwu bwu bwu bwu bwu* sound but I guess that is due to the air rushing in but having no where to go.

I think I've already missed the boat for cheap drop tops this year (as I do every year) but it is an itch I'm tempted to scratch. I'm not even that bothered about it being the most capable car in the world, just something that is a bit of fun. Maybe I'll treat myself next year :D

To be honest I find the MX5 quieter with the roof down. I have driven from Essex to Devon and Wales with the roof down, it's never been an issue.

It's the motorbikes roaring past at whoknowswhatmph with their engine being at ear height. That's not nice on the ears.

Just done a 100mile round trip, 1 way on the nice twisty A and B roads and the return leg on the motorway... Roof down all the way, wind-deflector up and it was a pleasure both ways.

Having only had the car for a week im not sure if the novelty will wear off, but i doubt it. Also im envious of the 7second drop time, mine takes about 20seconds :( but all i have to do it still and hold the switch whilst humming the transformers theme to myself.

Wierdly, I know exactly what you mean. With the roof up, the engine noise seems to reverberate into the cabin somewhat. You can hear more of the outside world than a tin top, but its muffled, and just sounds badly insulated (which it is).

With the roof down, theres still noise, but its of a different character. The engine sounds better and not confined to the cabin. Being able to hear the outside world clearly somehow makes it, not quiet, just...better.

It's weird, I cant really explain. I just find it more pleasurable to drive with the roof down.
