Looking at changing my car at the moment, an 07 plate FN2 Civic Type R. Have owned it for 2 years and its been very reliable, but fancy a change.

Just went to see an 55 Plate R32 with leather and a Milltek exhaust fitted. 66k on the clock. Would cost around 2k to change over. Feels fantastic to drive and the car sounds amazing. It just about scrapes into the cheaper tax bracket too, which is a bonus.

Any opinions? Would it be silly to change?

why not change to something completely different

R32 is a similar car to the Type R, hot hatch, N/A etc..

Why not something like a coupe or a sports car ?

To be honest, I need the 5 useable seats so a coupe/2 seater is out the window. Still want the practicality of a hatchback.

Not interested in a size up ? ie bmw 3 series / mondeo / a4 etc.. ?

Back on topic, the move isn't exactly sensible. Its 2k that gets you an 18 month older car thats very similar to what you've got. But its not like its a 10k clio 1.1 on finanace either.

Ultimately, only you can know if its worth it or not because we aren't the ones bored with your Civic.

I've had a look at a few other bigger cars but nothing really takes my fancy. While I need the practicality of a hatchback, I really don't need the bigger size.

The car is only 13 months older by the way. Feels a lot more rapid. Have a feeling it would probably hold its money better as well?

the R32 isn't that much more rapid though is it ?

did the one you drove have the DSG box ?

Not on paper, but it has an extra 50bhp and it certainly felt to pick up speed a lot quicker than my Type R.

It's a manual box. Driven some DSG models and like that too, but just happens that a manual has popped up at a decent price.

The R32 didn't feel that fast to me, but them i love the thrill of a turbocharged car. The vectra had great low down torque due to the Twinscoll turbo.

I don't know really.

Its not a move i'd make however.

Well I haven't driven a car with a turbo for a while, and only had my Civic to directly compare it to, but it felt very quick for its power, might have been the glorious sound though!

Any other opinions?

I think they're both much of a muchness. Obviously the Civic will feel a lot slower lower-down, but once onto VTEC I can't see it being much different.

I'm not the biggest fan of VTEC but I wouldn't change. I just can't see it being worth £2K to drop into a similar, but older, car.

Had a Mazda 3 MPS and got bored of it, so a 6 is a bit too close.

I know the R32 is a similar type of car, but it was a lot more expensive to begin with (around 8k I believe) and has leather, 4 wheel drive etc.

I think thats the main point here, do you feel it more fantastic enough than your CTR to justify it. If it's just as fun or just a little more fun then maybe not worth it, as it goes, change for changes sake isnt good on the wallet and you could get bored pretty easily.

The 6 is awd too without a heavy v6 up front and more power than the R32 and being a turbo has a lot of room left for tuning. JDM version are 275bhp and the uk was detuned to 256bhp.

Yep I know its AWD, but as well as having a similar car previously, I don't like the styling of the old 6. Back seats can't be folded down either which isn't ideal.

I hate the Civic and would rather have the Golf, so yea, I'd do it.

The Golf is worth about £12.5k retail, and your Civic, assuming average mileage of 45k has a trade book value of £8650.

£3k to change sounds about right.
