What would you do if you found a thief in your house?

I'd like to think I wouldn't hit them if there wasn't a need (I would class running from me a need). I'd probably turn all the lights on that I could and shut the door on him, if he tries to escape... consequences will never be the same.

Air pistol? Fair enough.

You'd still need to play your cards right to get away with firing it a burglar, though, like that fella in the paper a while back with the rifle.

Indeed, it was not so long ago that someone was prosecuted for killing an intruder with a shotgun in a clear case of self defense. Luckily the jury saw through the CPS malevolence. You can never be too sure in this country whether justifiable self defense will see you in prison.

You could cause someone a lot of pain without actually killing them using a legal (12ft/lbs) Air Rifle.

I have two Air Arms ones under my bed I very rarely use, though I'm not sure I'd get them out if I thought there was someone in my house. Might do.

If nothing else, the intimidation factor has got to be massive. It also puts a decent distance between you and them if they lunge for you with a knife or whatever, and a decently solid object to block any attacks with.

My BSA Super Ten, Air Arms Pro Elite, Daystate x2 Prestige were always kept at the clubs armory.

The only issue really depends on the layout of your house though, you could find yourself in a tight spot if you are trying to turn corners/enter/exit rooms quickly with a rifle.

A pistol is much better suited, however they are (legally) limited at 6 ft/lbs which may not be enough power to go through thick clothing for example.

Frankly you would be better off hitting someone with the rifle rather than attempting to shoot them with it.

I have a gold rounders sized bat, a large machete thing and a flick blade.

But in all seriousness I'd be at the top of the stairs slightly looking over the banister banging and shouting. Most thieves are cowards and wouldn't want to fight off a 22 year old with a bat in his hand and having the disadvantage of the lower ground unless they had a shooter.

They'd rather rob old people as they won't put up a fight.

No idea, I'm sure as hell though that I wouldn't get dressed to go down stairs. Not much scarier than an irate naked guy. In the bedroom next to ours I have a hammer and a 4ft spirit level. Would probably grab those and see what occured. Assuming they got in through the front door they would have to get past me at the foot of the stairs to get out. I'm not particularly well built at 6'1" and 16st and if it got in to a straight fist fight I'd almost certainly get my ass handed to me by anyone who has ever punched anyone in anger. As long as i didn't let it get that far I'd back me though.

I'd like to think that I'd be calm enough to say "lay on the ground with your hands behind your head or I'm going to hit you", in reality I doubt I would be so calm.

We are quite fortunate in that our house is built 5ft off the ground in any case so entering via windows is more difficult than most houses (though of course far from impossible).

I'd probably do a similar thing, my stairs are steep and narrow, I'd probably stand at the top of them with a chair and start yelling I've called the police, even if there were a couple of them it would be hard to get up the stairs with me jabbing a chair in their face.

Would probably tell my girlfriend to hide in the loft and pull the ladder up just in case.

No have-a-go-hero antics from me :p

this tbh...

if its some skinny chav then he'd likely run away upon simply being discovered

if its some crazy druggy type then shooting him in the torso with a small metal pellet is just going to **** him off a lot

tell my friend who lost his eye :( there not powerful at all

Way to completely miss the point. A rifle in close quarters is much better used as a bat than a gun was all he said. He never said that they can't hurt people or do damage.

I have a heavy hammer and claw next to my bed... not saying id use it, infact id have to feel that me or the family's life/health are in danger.

Id do what most have said, if I hear them downstairs... ill make a racket upstairs, shout down abuse.. put lights on.. try and get the mrs and kids in a room together and worst comes to worst, thats the line im defending.
