FN2 Type R to Golf R32 - opinions?

I'd do it as I like the R32, preferably the DSG variant but manual is still good.

Would have to be one with at least the leather standard style seats though, the Recaros obviously a bonus but wouldn't touch one with the standard cloth seats.

Yeah it has the standard leather seats - wouldn't go near a version with cloth!

I hate the Civic and would rather have the Golf, so yea, I'd do it.

The Golf is worth about £12.5k retail, and your Civic, assuming average mileage of 45k has a trade book value of £8650.

£3k to change sounds about right.

Do I recall correctly a while back you test drove an R32 and a 2.0T GTI (I think possibly these were mk5 cars, before the mk6 released?) and came out feeling the GTI was the better all round car out of the two?

You are right, yes.

The GTI is better balanced, it handles better and the engine feels better suited to the car.

The R32 sounds better, is quicker and has a great engine but it does feel a bit nose heavy.

These were both Mk5 cars.

Just out of interest how much would your Civic sell for? I fancy one for my next car and the fact that Fox hates them makes me want one even more

Oh as for the swap personally I wouldnt, going off my mates old 2.8 4Motion. I know the R32 has more more power but god it was boring, slow and the handling wasnt particulary great either

I don't think your mates old 2.8 200bhp (or possibly even the 174bhp if pre-2002) Mk4 4Motion has much bearing on the performance credentials of a 3.2 247bhp Mk5 R32 to be fair.

r

Selling for around 9k roughly - has some good options like 19" rage alloys and the gloss black front and back splitters. I'd recommend you have a drive in one, I've enjoyed owning mine but some people detest them!

I clearly said "Going off my mates old 2.8" as thats where my experiance ends I never claimed they were exactly the same, it was post 2002 and I thought they were 215 not that I get hung up on BHP figures anymore

Yes, because a 2.8 is just like a Mk5 R32.

Not.

I never said it was, my experiance with the 2.8 was a let down, just sayin

Its a while off yet i'll wait for them to come down a little more but I do like them i've owned quite a few Hondas and wouldnt mind another in the future but they're just a just a little out of reach and i'm still quite happy with mine at the moment, thanks for the info

Audi S3 ?

Unfortunately they seem to hold their value rather well though with 56 plate cars still going for around £17K from dealers.

I'd say it will hold its money better than the civic, but I doubt it will have the same residuals as the MK4.

Audi S3 is completely out of budget. Don't necessarily need to change cars, but this R32 came up and seemed like good value at 11k compared to others on the market.

My step dad had one for around a year and I got to drive it a lot, it was a very fun car imho, not boring at all.

He tested a lot of similar cars at the time including the Civic, which he thought wasn't bad at all, but decided on the Golf in the end.

Had some refinement to it, cruising at speed was effortless and comfortable, but was still plenty of fun over the moors and down the lanes around here.

Looked decent (for a golf :p) and sounded lovely :)

That doesn't stop it being a largely pointless comparison though, seeing as they are different generations of car.

It's a different platform/chassis, a different engine, a different gearbox etc.

An r32 will feel quicker than the civic it has a lot more low end pull.

I recently got rid of my mk5 dsg (57 plate) amazing car and ticks about every box.

Can't believe people are recommending mondeos etc this is a much more capable car.

Sounds amazing, looks good, well built, 4wd, holds it's money fairly well.

Only down sides are high tax (your lucky with lower bracket) poor mpg. Quite high insurance.

I got rid of mine due to the running costs but the only car I'd really swap it for is an rs4 nothing else for me offers so much in a package that the average person can afford.

why not change to something completely different

R32 is a similar car to the Type R, hot hatch, N/A etc..

Why not something like a coupe or a sports car ?

Not really.

Type r is 2ltr high revving fwd and light weight

R32 is 3.2 v6 fairl low revving, 4wd and quite a bit heavier.

Both deliver there power totally different, both handle differently.
