My LG plasma needs a new panel apparently (lots of red sparkles) the engineer who came to view it said that it had to be replaced at a cost of £600.

The TV is under a John Lewis warranty and so the cost will be picked up by them.

My concern is that the engineer is a contractor and looked like a proper cowboy. How can I be sure that if he replaces the panel that I don't get a low quality replacement from, say, a cheap chinese factory?

Are panels the determining factor for image quality and are they unique to models?

its likley that JL will just give you the money for a new tv, but if you were to get a new screen put in it would be the screen that goes with your tv so it will be a LG panel they are not interchangeable and there are no cheap chinese factory panel makers any more, there are only three plasma makers left Panasonic,Samsung and LG

there aren't any cheap chinese plasmas. Its too much of a niche market, the cheap chinese and taiwanese companies are churning out LCDs now.
