A car for my tight father

Would appreciate any thoughts on this as I'm starting to struggle!

Long story short, my dad wants to chop in his ageing 97 P Reg Volvo V70 (2.5 Petrol) for something more suitable for 25k miles a year.

Problem is, he wants a diesel but doesn't want to spend any money. 3 grand plus the Volvo is the ideal, really.

So any thoughts on what he should get? Looked at 56 diesel Mondeo earlier today (identical to mine which I'm really happy with), but it was tatty and had done 125k. Am I right in thinking the older ones have weaker engines?

The only good car we found at a dealer, for the money, was a Citroen C5 1.6 HDi with 85K. Seemed looked after but I was too scared of it being French to let him buy it. On at 3.5k, is it too much of a bargain to dismiss?

Appreciate any advice.

someone whos not slaughtered point him to a diesel s type :)

dare i say it get him another volvo

have a look at some of these ex police car places for a derv volvo. yes their ex traffic or similar but they will have been well looked after and best of all they are cheap might have to hunt abit for a diesel though but they will come in your budget

people like this get stuck in their ways. So why not just give him what he obviously wants:

A diesel, newer version of the car he already has.

Looks nice but am loathe to let him get anything quite that old. The family have had the current Volvo for yonks and despite being a well built car it's been 'old' for a long time - lots of electric niggles amongst other things. An 02 plate just feels like in a year or so he'd be getting into that territory again. 6 grand seems pricey considering:

Shame it's poverty spec, but still....

Doesn't have to be that one. I haven't got access to autotrader because i'm at work.

Just using that ad to illustrate the sort of thing i'm on about. Volvo V70 D5 sounds ideal given he doesn't seem to be keen on your suggestions judging by the wording of your posts ?

Don't waste your time and worry, if you suggest something and it breaks it'll be your fault.

If he's anything like my father you'll suggest cars, ask him his budget he will say £10k and he wants a economical diesel, you'll take a long time finding them, even see a few then he will double his budget overnight and buy a £22k 2.5t petrol kuga on a whim one Sunday without even a call to you to say stop looking, he will even buy the gap insurance and the £300 'protection' treatment

I wouldn't waste my time again

sums up my experince with my dad. Despite my best efforts he's bought the same car 4 times in a row, each time just buying the newer model of the car he already owns. Before those 4 he briefly flirted with a rover 414, but before that he bought 2 of the same car in a row which is the model in the range down from the one he's since bought 4 of !

He steadfastly refuses to test drive anything else as he finds the car buying experience "too confusing"

I don't bother anymore,

"what TV should I buy"
"here you go I'll email you a link"
"thanks"

some time later

"did you get a TV"
"yes from Tesco because it's easier"
"easier as in easier to buy in store & lug home than buy on line and have it delivered to your door"
"don't be smart son"

a while later

"Is that HD on your TV son"
"no Dad you bought a crap TV"
"don't be smart son"

rinse and repeat with phones / laptops / pressure washers etc etc etc

Had the same with my dad, wanted a cheap runaround i suggested a derv, anyway went against all my advice and bought a 1.1 getz.

Anyway further down the line i bought a metro diesel whilst the scoob is off the road, oh this goes well wish id bought a diesel now.

Fathers grr!!!

Never again do i suggest anything to anyone, 99% of the time they go against you anyway.

Spot on. My folks are exactly the same.

Rover 75 CDTi - you can get full spec models for pennies now. They are pretty decent cars, more comfortable than pretty much anything in it's class of the time and they are very economical. Worth a look.
