Couple of GTX480 questions :)

Was just checking the 480SOC thread, and seem people have been having a lot of problems with "artefacts" (not sure what they are, but they sound nasty :P)

Maybe the 5850's would be safer oO (not to mention more fps)

hmm confused :(

Yes i am one of those people! if i had to choose again i would probably go with the 570 and lose a bit of performance over reliability, noise and heat.

Yes, im one of those people aswell.
Artefacts are just random flashes that you see where they shouldnt be.
Look at the videos in that thread. Buckster provided some and i also gave a youtube link.
5850s would be safer but they dont scale well and heat will be an issue.
The GTX 480 SOC is extremely quiet compared to my 6970. The 480 also has more RAM which might come in handy.

Yes they think its the PSU not enough to power it hence why i said about the PSU and to get at least an 850 80+ PSU

I know they say on the box of the 480 minimum power is 600w and for a standard 480 at default clock speeds a 600w is fine but for some reason and i am not sure why as my SOC pulls less power than a standard (1.025v compared to 1050v) a 600w causes artifacts on the 480SOC, i have the 480soc and a 1000w psu in SLI with a sparkle 480 overclocked to 1100v 850core 1700 shaders and 2000 ram speeds (480 SOC at 820Mz 1641Shaders 1900Ram) and have ZERO issues so the cards are fine ITS ALL ABOUT the psu

EDIT if you have a single 5850 then another is the best bet but once again it will require good solid PSU and good air circulation but beware of driver issues in CF (from what i read and am told they are not to great)

Its not all about the PSU. I have a Silverstone 1kw and i still get artefacts. Silverstone use seasonic parts and they are reliable.
When i put my SOC back to stock 480 cloacks my problems dissapear.when i up the voltage at SOC speeds my problems also go away.

have you got yours back from gigabyte yet chap

really !! thats not good hope they dont say the same to you that it is fine and its your rig as that what they said to the other chap on the other forum

therutz problem is could all be different problems with each of us - who knows

so in Cleecoos case perhaps his isn't stable at stock SOC speeds but PSU is ok

and in my case pehaps is stable at stock SOC speeds but my PSU is not ok

so many variables hard to know whats going on

True that

All im saying to the chap who wanted the advise is to go for the best PSU he can if he get a 480SOC as it would be a shame if he gets it and has a PSU problem specially IF he is going to want to SLI in the future

I dont think a 750 is good enough for SLI

I would only look at 900-1000 if i ever planned to go multi card.

5850cf vs gtx480
Even in Anandtech's questionable selection of games benched the 5850s are faster.

750w isn't good enough for 480 SLI, but certainly enough for two 5850s. You don't need to buy a new PSU for the 480 either, unless you SLI it.

Total system power consumption with dual 5870s = just under 600w, so two 5850s will probably be pulling around 500-550w. Multi gpu setups are never going to be quite as stable as a single card setup, but it's certainly not as bad as TheRutz is suggesting. I've built quite a few systems with sli-crossfire in them (as most of the time it offers better performance for the cash), and have never had the recipients of those machines complain of any problems.

Single cards are more stable though

Driver wise they are a bit more stable, there is no denying that, but dual cards aren't the nightmare that they have been made out to be in this thread. Both SLI and crossfire are mature platforms, and will work fine when slotted in your machine.

Unless you have two 480s with a generic 350w!:)
Havent tried dual card but if the oppurtunity comes to pick up another 480 for cheap later, then I will.

True, would love to see the fireworks if someone did do that though. One expensive bonfire :D

If you get the opportunity for a second 480, go for it! Will absolutely slaughter everything. Damn, I'm jealous now. I just pray to god the 480s are still on sale when I get my student loan in :p

MOJO

I will say i have read and been TOLD that the 5 series had driver issues

I went strait from a 4870x2 which was an awsome card (sad to sell it but was upgrading and needed the money) so i had NO experiance MYSELF on the 5 series cards and i was going to get a 5 series then read and spoke to people about them and decided on the GTX 480 (£400 at the time got mine 2nd hand for £264) SO PLEASE DONT QUOTE ME i am just saying about it thats all

As for the PSU i said IF HE PLANS ON UPGRADING TO SLI IN THE FUTURE then the 750 WOULD NOT BE GOOD ENOUGH

I am not saying go for a 480 i said also previously that IF HE HAD A 5850 THEN ANOTHER 5850 WOULD BE VERY GOOD FOR HIM

My 480 soc is going back next week. i get errors even if i take the core clock down to 780!
Default voltage is @1050 if i take it higher errors and artifacts are slightly lower but temps reach 90+
Whenever i play any game the fans seem to run full speed within minutes, is that normal?
