fast car for about 4k that returns 30 odd mpg

In a 182 you should be getting 33-34mpg even if you're having a bit of fun in it, mixed with normal driving. On a motorway you can cruise and easily get 40mpg, but it will be a bit boring.
 
Um, if you were to get a Civic Type R for under 4k (Ep3 version) it will either have loads going wrong with it, or been thrashed to hell and / or very high mileage.
Although, saying that the high mileage wouldnt be a problem as they are very well built cars (got one myself)
You can get 30mpg out of it though, if you never intend on using the vtec :p

Its a good suggestion though given the price range, £900 ones may be rust buckets but for less than £4k you could get a very decent Prelude Type-S which would be rust free and faster than Type-R EP3's or DC2's, power when you need it and nearly 40mpg on a run.

40mpg from an H22A? Really?! The absolute best I had out of my gen 5 was 300 miles to the tank, and that was coasting on to the forecourt after much nannying of the right foot.

Agreed, the H22A in my 5th Gen Lude always returned ~30mpg even if driven out of VTEC.

The B18C driven off VTEC returns great economy, easily 35mpg on a long run.

I said nearly not exactly, my 5th gen SiR would regularly do 37/38 mpg while doing a 250 mile motorway trip, its not uncommon for people who do a lot of motorway driving to get 350-380 miles to a tank.
