so i just built my first system (in sig) and i wanted to make the fans less than 100% all the time so i installed MSI control panel 2

it installed fine, i opened it up, it said all the information about my board, there was a tab that said cooling so i thought the fan controlling settings might be in there

i clicked and the instant i clicked, the machine shut off and now when i press the ON button, the machine light comes on for a brief second and then shuts down

AAAHHHHH!!!!! PLEASE HELP! :( :( :( :(

It's very unlikely clicking that cooling link caused the problem. Clicking on that simply opens another menu. No settings are altered. Probably coincidence. I'd check your connections are all tight. Especially make sure heatsink is properly mounted. Check gpu, ram and any other plugins for secure fit. In fact, probably best to reseat them.

If that fails, then rip it apart and slowly, methodically build and test as you progress.

If you have a multimeter you could test the psu by first disconnecting all power leads to the board and jump starting it.

No need to fiddle about with jumpers or batteries.

Your motherboard has a small button on the I/O panel to reset the BIOS.

No hotlinking!

I didn't know about that. That's a handy button.

After reading th OPs post, I tried clicking on the cooling tab. It locked my computer up. I had to hold down the power button to force a power down. It powered back up ok though. Being a glutton for punishment (and to see if it was repeatable), I tried it again. Same thing happened. Ooh, err.

No major problem in my case but best that folks are aware of the possibilities here.

Control centre II, by the way.

Try updating to the latest BIOS if you haven't already.

Also the MSI site states "note: need install Intel ME driver to enable CPU overclock".

Perhaps the program gets into trouble without that driver.

YES SEE!!!

i uninstalled, downloaded it again from a different source and the same thing happened! The machine just shut down and wont start up unless i turn off the psu for 5 mins!

Yes, I saw that on the MSI utility download page. It says to install ME driver. I presumed that meant Management Engine driver. If that's correct then I had installed it. (Or went through the motions and it seemed to install it)

Glad it's working panyan. Best control your fans direct from the bios in the meantime.

the problem is in the bios i have these settings:

set cpu target temp - 50 degrees (curretly floating around 30)
set min cpu fan speed - 50%
sys fan 1 - 50%
sys fan 2 - 50%

and the system is exactly the same, no change in fan speeds??!

and yes, i am saving before exiting :p

Perhaps you need to use the BIOS settings or MSI Control Panel 2.

Have you tried uninstalling MSI Control Panel 2 and just using the BIOS settings?

Is this a clean windows install?

Surveyor is wondering if leaving Control Centre installed is mucking up the bios.

MSI have a v1.9 bios on thier site.

Have you cleared cmos though?

Remember the annoying days maybe 2001 - 03 or so having to get on your knees and remove a graphics card/PCI card to get to the jumper. Or dependent on the battery placement it was below one of the cards.

It's great how times have changed.
