Underclocking a reference AMD 6950 (2gb)

Voting troll. :p

In all seriousness, can't see why anyone would want to do this with a high end card anyway, if it wasn't being used for gaming then fair point, but you'd be best off just selling it for a 5770 or similar.

News on the underclocking guys.

I've just spent the last 8 hours trying to underclock this whilst keeping a good temperature. I actually hit 52*C at one point, but managed to get it to run at a cool 38*C. Again though, the fan had to be ran at 100%.

But heres the results..

100% fan speed at 200mhz clock speed. What pointlessness is this? Still that is a much better underclock. I assume this is in full 3D mode?

Go even lower. You might even get it running sub-ambient :p

Surely there is NO point in underclocking a GPU? What am I missing? I sometimes underclock my CPU, but it is a painless one button process which just makes my web surfing silent, as it turns all the case / cooler fans off.

You do know these cards can go close to 100 degress without any problem whatsoever? 52 degrees isn't hot.. why are you doing this again? Just to see how cool the GPU can go?

Surely if the card has a large change in temperature quite quickly, your underclocked mode to the normal mode which will make more heat that can't be good for the card either.

confused.com?

i don't get it, why would underclocking a card make it hotter? surely it would be a lot cooler, and you wouldn't need the fan on even 20%?:confused::confused: mind = blown:confused::confused::confused::confused:

You know that underclocking is really risky right?
If you run it underclocked without changing the stock voltage it can fry the card...
Thats why the temperature hasnt scaled with the underclock. Your pumping the same volts through transistors that are changing on/off states at a reduced rate (75%).
Be careful or you may end up with performance degredation or even worse a dead card.
The warranty is also voided by underclocking, because of the previously mentioned reasons.

Why would you underclock and run the fan at 100%. The person either does not have a clue or it's a complete windup.

My money is on it being a windup.

Have i got a gas leak in the house? or is the OP saying he has UNDERCLOCKED his card. lol

Hay 25! i have your next unclocking challange... Buy a 990x and see if you can get it down to 100mhz.. That will be so cool. THEN send it to me when your done and i will see if i can beat it.

You must have the biggest waste of time post i have ever seen.

Can you please explain to us all WHY you would want to spend £200 on a card and make it run like a £40 card?
