Hi guys, firstly apoplogies if this is the wrong place to post this kind of thread, wasn't too sure where to put it this seemed like the best place =)

My question is about multivitamins and fish oil. I want to start taking both to get the best of both worlds (Omega 3 etc.) but you can 'overdose' on vitamins as such which obviously isn't a good thing. Just wondering what and how you guys take yours?

take 1 a day and just eat a healthy balanced diet, most people dont need these vits imo you get it all in your food if you eat healthy enough.

I got mine from Holland and Barretts they were doing an offer but still expensive, will have to try online.

I agree TOM91x91 but unfortunately our lives are such that we don't get the chance to do that in some of our diets.

How about the fish oil? If I'm taking 1 multivitamin a day shall I take fish oil everyday too?

Big waste of money tbh..

There may be some benefits from cod liver oil tablets but taking 'multi vitamins' is a fools game tbh...

90% of multi-vits are a waste of time if you eat a balanced diet.
90% of high street Omega 3 supps are too low dose to get any of the benefits unless you pop them like Smarties, you want to order online from proper places like MyProtein (which are way stronger and cost less than rip-off merchants like H&B).

Ideally take a multi vitamin and a multi mineral, if you can. The levels of minerals in a combined tablet tends to leave a bit to be desired. By a brand like Solgar, Biocare, Higher Nature, Viridian, Pharma nord, Soloray etc. You'll be hard pressed to overdose on nutrients. I've recommended people many times over the years, for example when dealing with immune or suppressed mood, to increase zinc intake to up to 50mg, for the short term. In an average (poor quality) supplement from the high street you might not even see 5 - 10 mg. Remember the RDA doesn't indicate levels for 'good' health.

Fatty acids (Omegas). You can go to town on these, every cell in the body needs them. Ideally take a liquid. Better to buy high quality and do it right. If you take capsules then you'll be looking at taking quite a few to equal the liquid. Start on something like one tablespoon a day. Kids need even more EFA's than adults, that's when they need it for GROWTH. Another connection here with this and the East Asian people of this world. Generally a shorter race, but as time marches on they are becoming taller. This has been since the introduction of a western diet, which even this at least, will have some good fats in there somewhere, lol. Previously if you look back at the traditional diet they ate a lot less fat. Something like 15% v the western world's 40%.

Worst case scenario, you buy a high street average brand and take a couple of capsules a day...much better than nothing at all.

Just a word of warning on a related note, a lot of fish products with high levels of Omega 3 unfortunatly these days have a fairly high level of mecury in them, I really really don't reccomend more than 200g a week.

200g a week? I take 1-2g per day (not including what I get from proper food) - 200g a week would equal regularly soiled pants, shirley?

I'm also in the camp which thinks that a healthy balanced diet is much better than multivitamins. Personally I have never noticed a difference when taking them. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the benefits experienced are in fact due to the placebo effect.
