OK.. so after kinda being forced into selling my Asus 5850 (yes, I'm still gutted) due to a lack of finances, I've now got a Palit Green GTS 250 1GB. A step up from the backup X700Pro I've been using, but still gutting having to drop to something like this again lol. (Wife was not happy at all about me selling the 5850 as technically it was a gift, but it was the thing I could sell the quickest for a roughly known figure.)

I've used one before but only briefly as it was black screening (fault with card).. so I'll probably be using this and abusing the overclocking as much as possible!

I'll give Crysis 2 a blast when I can, but likely on low, and certainly not at 1920*1200 I'd become used to {Queue tears}.

Because I also wanted to show that it was more important to keep us a float than keep a replaceable bit of tech.

As you say it's better than your old emergency card, but I'm sure with a bit of thought and maybe the sale of one or two other items (I always seem to find random bits to sell when I need to) you can get yourself a nice DX11 card again. ;)

should have sold your audi.

Really? A 1998 Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDI with 251K miles on the clock, almost needing an MOT and tax, and slightly damaged front wings (not by me). Don't think it would sell as quick as the gfx card. I'd then have to cycle every day, I wouldn't be able to take the dogs anywhere other than local (Local being Dartmoor), and I wouldn't be able to take the wife and baby anywhere. Excellent idea ;-)

Now that Crysis 2 is out and a host of other games now out and just around the corner.. gonna be missing the 5850 lol. At least I know I'll probably be getting the best from the 250 with my quad :-D

Haha sorry i was pulling your leg :p you made the right choice.

edit: and tbh, if you keep an eye out on the MM over the coming months you'll see 5850's drop to around £70 anyway, so maybe just use this as an excuse to pick up a bargain when you see one.

If you're forced to sell your graphics card (of all things) due to financial problems, you should be worried, very worried.

Not necessarily, sure it's a pity that he has had to but we obviously don't know the full details. In fact we barely know anything. Depends on priorities as well, circumstances and many other things. :)

lol it's all down to the wife having a baby and not being in work at present (She just resigned from her other job after her maternity leave was over - as she wants to look after our little girl). So far I've given up 2 of my 3 cars (200sx + Honda SMX), and got a diesel estate to do everything and save money. I've taken up cycling to work 20 miles a day to save on diesel payouts... I've cut down our outgoings by about £300 a month so far (not much further I can go), and my reasonable wage just about covers all the bills.

My buying the bike caused me to go over our budget as I was expecting a bike loan from work that didn't arrive until the next month.

Bottom line, money is very very tight. It won't get any better really until my wife goes back to work, but that's what you have to do when you have kids.

Anyway... graphics forum :p I'll let you know how I get on! (I won't be holding back on the overclock.. although I'm sure it's not really that interesting for such an old card lol).

p.s. I incidently had my paintball marker up for sale as well for around the same value (A BT Delta), but I knew the gfx card would go first.. it's just the way of things - bigger market on here for pc parts :-)

Well.. it's all installed and I'm pretty surprised how well BFBC2 was actually running. I'm sure the 260 216's, I had did not run BFBC2 as well as this card... the difference being I was running a 3.2Ghz E4300 before, and now running a 3.4Ghz Q6600.

I had everything on 'high' (in the first four options) and at 1920*1200 and it was very playable, I actually enjoyed playing and it wasn't lagging or 'slow'. I really thought it would have struggled, I was pleasantly surprised.

The Quad core is really helping for BFBC2.

I think you might be pleasantly suprised at just how well the GTS250 will cope with even the latest games as long as you don't mind dropping the settings a bit.

Its not such a bad card tbh. Its pretty much on par with a 4850 and with some overclocking you could probably get to somewhere near 4870/gtx260 performance. If you look at it that way you should be ok until things settle down for you.

+1 for the Nvidia 250, i ran this with 2 x 22 inch screens, although wasnt running the newer games at the time, did you eve online which 2 clients, full settings no slowdown.

I actually regret selling on mine. Ended up buying the Nvidia 450, my finances took a hit recently.

I Think your baby is far more important than a nice ultra high end system, as long as its 'bang for buck' thats what counts.

Well, I've been running this for a while now, and can honestly say it's absolutely fine. I'm actually stunned. I really think it's more to do with two things. Running a quad rather than a dual core and having 1gb of ram at 1920*1200 resolution.

The faster GTX 260 216 ran like a bag of spanners at this res (as did the 4870 1gb) and couldn't really manage high settings. With the quad in the GTS 250 1GB, is absolutely fine. I have no idea of FPS to be completely honest, but I'm having a real good time playing BFBC2 and World in Conflict :-)

Can honestly recommend this card if your on a budget :-) (I REALLY didn't think I'd be able to!)

(edit: Just to clarify the above, I'm not saying that the 260/4870 ran badly probably due to the quad core, and possibly the lack of cache on the dual core e4300 I was running ).
