New apple shop in york is opening now they are offering 10% off their computers. Is this a decent offer or just a marketing gimmick? Do shops offer 10% discount on this very often?

Is it a good time to buy an Imac?

Indeed it is Imac for 930 so they haven't put the price up before hand! Although wouldn't surprise me! Is it a good time to buy though? On apples website saying there is a new version of their OS?

Anything else I should know about an Imac before I dive in?

Well if you know a student, you can send them in to buy it for you. :)

I believe the discount with HE is ~15% so it's well worth doing. Know any family members at Uni?

Hell, i'll do it for you if you live in the SW?

Or you just need the web link to the HE store and do it all online.

Each educational establishment has their own url but you do not need to provide any form of proof that you attend such a place when ordering.

I thought it detected whether you were behind a uni firewall and then lets you on it? I'm sure I've heard that before.

10% is good if you're not eligible for any other discount. Apple never have a 'sale' on so if you want an iMac, go out and buy it.

New version of the OS (Lion) is due out in the summer, so I guess a minor spec bump could occur (sandy bridge, thunderbolt) but doubtful it will be much different, especially if you're only looking at base spec models anyway. Certainly wouldn't hold off waiting for it anyway. OS upgrade is only likely to cost £25 - £75 also so not worth worrying about.

Take a look at mac rumors as they have a buyers guide based on product life cycle.

Thanks for the above advice, is their likely to be much difference in OS? Also what other discounts are available? Do you know how much HE discount is?

Just google it for the new features of lion, but it essentially brings elements of iOS (in terms of application management and launching) back to the mac amongst other things - still looks quite similar.

HE is 15%, so not really worth worrying about the difference - especially as it sounds like you dont qualify for HE anyway.

You'll be waiting forever if you're always waiting for the latest and greatest release of anything. Just go and buy one :)
