What winds you up most when you're driving?

People not following the lanes around roundabouts properly (i.e. just driving straight when they're in the left lane) so they almost cut me up / nearly squish me if I don't brake suddenly or accelerate past them. Sure, if there's no-one else near the roundabout, do whatever the hell you like, but not when there's someone right next to you! Particularly bad if they've sat at traffic lights next to you, so they have no excuse along the lines of 'oh, I didn't check my blind spot' or some nonsense. Grrr...!

I don't get why people do this, they either don't know they're over the line (bad spacial awareness, not checking mirror) or just don't care/realise the problems they cause

I'd like to think it's ignorance rather than arrogance most of the time but I'm not sure!

I think it's such a simple and basic thing to do that whether it's ignorance or arrogance doesn't really matter! I suspect most of the time it is ignorance, but I've had a couple too many close calls to let it slide. I don't quite drive round roundabouts with my thumb waiting on the horn, but mentally it's ready!

No you dont, because when you move past the parked car, there wont be anybody coming from the other way to indicate to, because if they are close enough that you have to warn them you are moving out, you will of failed anyway and following traffic will be aware you intend to drive past the parked car, because you havent indicated left to pull in behind it.

All three tests I've taken (Bike, Car, HGV) I've been told not to do it.

This is going to be the same as the passing on the left fiasco,

http://www.driving-test-success.com/meeting_traffic/meeting_traffic.html
http://www.ukbikeforum.co.uk/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t19347.html

So at the very least "good drivers" or "advanced drivers" view it as bad practice even after you have passed your test, as your road positioning, speed and observation will of told everyone what you are doing, and indicating then brings an element of doubt to you actual intentions.
The bike link is a little different as you get people arguing about being as safe as possible due to ignorant car drivers not paying attention, which in itself is true enough seeing as half of them dont know when to indicate or not.

Your first link says you don't need to indicate if the are no other moving vehicles around, the second link doesn't mention it however in another section on that site it says:

SIGNAL IF NECESSARY - signals should be given to help other road users, to tell them of your intent. When moving off, if you see oncoming traffic or pedestrians, you must signal.

Im not sure where you live but its the done thing round here and not doing it would probably result in an accident sometimes, hence why they require you to do it on your test....

I have so many, that I’ve packed up over the 10 years I have been driving, and the 3 years riding, so I’ll just list a few:

  • Lane discipline – we’re all taught it, but so many times I’ve almost had someone go down the side of me in the car or on the bike, because the other driver decides their lane isn’t wide enough and wants to take half of mine too – seems to happen especially on roundabouts and is bleedin dangerous when I’m on the bike alongside them

  • People who tailgate – so many variations to this, but the main one is the * holes on the motorway, the ones who come racing up in lane 3, as I’m already in it passing traffic in lanes 1 and 2 – so there’s nowhere for me to go (unless a magical lane 2.5 appears!), then they sit there, inches (probably feet) off the rear bumper, gesturing and flashing lights... I’m already doing over the NSL so what more do they want?

  • Middle lane morons – this is a follow on from point 2 above, as sometimes they’re the cause for ‘not having anywhere to go’, but I hate these people! What’s the point of being on an almost empty motorway and sitting in the middle lane? I appreciate that sometimes it’s pointless moving back into lane 1 for 10 seconds or so, before moving back out, but when you could comfortably more back into lane 1, why do people feel the need to just sit in lane 2???

  • And one other, but granted not a massive issue – I guess I just see it as pretty stupid looking/pointless; people who drive one handed, holding the wheel at the top like they’re playing a role from Boyz in tha Hood! Why? Why? Why? It doesn’t look cool, and if you were to lose control, I’m sure your natural reaction would be to grab the wheel at the ten to two position... assuming it’s not all over by then.

It goes without saying that there’s lots of other stuff too – boy racers trying to race everyone and everything on the road, people not bothering with signals, old people, horse boxes going well (I mean well) below posted limits etc etc.

One thing I have noticed, and I won’t be alone, is a ever decreasing level of patience by all road users – I guess the rising costs, congestion etc, are all contributing to this, but some people really are impatient and dangerous * holes on the road!

I sometimes drive one handed if I'm just taking it easy in relatively slow moving traffic because it's comfortable. I couldn't give a **** whether people think it looks stupid or not.

Well, it does :p :D

Can't see how it would be any more comfortable than ten to two or quarter to three though

Like the OP says, this is just things that wind us up, which is all relative to our own thoughts, so there's bound to be lots of things people won't give a **** to :)

Sneaky edit: just to clarify - I don't mean driving one handed being a pet peeve, just when it's done holding the wheel specifically at the top - it looks rooster-ish :D

I drive one handed, but hold the wheel at the 2 or 3 oclock position with the one hand that I'm using (ie where the wheel spoke is)

People who I cannot see in their own mirrors.
If i cannot see them, when behind them, then how the hell do they know what is going on behind them?
If they have no interest in what is going on behind them then chances are there is a lot more they dont care about while driving, which worries me :(

People who stop miles behind the car in front at red light, and those who start coasting at 15mph when they see red light miles ahead. Probably the same kind of drivers to be honest.

I do that :)

If the traffic allows, I'll coast to a traffic light too but it depends on the road.
I'd much rather coast and then accelerate in 2nd whilst still rolling than sit on the brakes and have to start again.

Ahhh, I see where I went wrong. I just assumed it was one handed in general, but you did say at the top specifically, my bad. Yeah, I don't do that.

Drivers who insist on sitting at 40mph no matter the speed limit, whether it be 30 or 70 I really hate that. Or, people with poor lane discipline at round-a-bouts when you have to either break because they cut you up or nearly drive into the side of them when they stay in the same lane all the way around!

Grrr...

Best you dont move to Washington then, lot of roundabouts there :)

I do this, usually lets me get in a sneaky overtake if its a dual carriage as by the time the light turns green i'm already doing 20mph as the traffic queue is lifting the clutch.

The only time i've seen people doing this kind of thing they have known the light sequence fairly well so if i don't know it i'll just wander along behind them and benefit from their local knowledge. Not yet had someone get it dramatically wrong,
