Good evening folks,

I'm not actually looking to buy this car, but I've been asked by my girlfriend to find out if it is any good as her uncle wants to buy it and seems to think I know a lot about cars, which I dont really :p Not BMWs anyway.

The car he is thinking of buying is this - Link - you'll have to excuse the slightly odd website, its a Norwegian one.

He basically wants a BMW Estate of some sort as he needs more room in the car and just sold his Golf GTI. This looks a good example to me although the 197BHP may be a bit low on what is surely a heavy car?

I should add, this costs £50k over there, it sounds pretty insane but that is how the currency is. So think of it as a 'normal' price, whatever that is.

Are there any better options/engines/models/etc that he should look at instead of this, or is this a good example? If you have any questions I'll try and answer as best I can!

Thanks in advance.

Horrible, nasty Business Navigation and it appears to have been owned by somebody devoid of any taste whatsoever, hence the silly black aftermarket wheels on a 2008 5 Series diesel estate.

Surely he can find an unmolested example?

The 525d is largely pointless in that it has the same fuel consumption as the more powerful 530d.

Right. I'm sure there are plenty of 'unmolested' examples, and the 530d engine is better than the 525d, I shall have a browse.

Edit: Something a bit more like this? Or is that the business navigation?

I know, its pretty steep. They earn a lot more generally though so it makes up for it I suppose.
They definitely do not earn enough more to compensate for those car prices :p

The average salary would have to be something like £75,000 pa to balance it out!

Then they are getting seriously shafted on the car front then

I suppose you would just buy your car somewhere else for a normal price and drive it home.

If it's anything like Denmark, cars that remain in the country for greater than a certain (short) length of time pay a rate of import taxation equivalent to the original registration taxation (which in Denmark is up to 180% of the value), stepped down based on how old the car is.

If anybody wants some info on Norway and its prices, do a search. I've babbled on about it for ages before.

Ignoring the price, just get one with the best specification possible.
I don't know how the car tax system works, so I have no idea how much more a 530d would cost to run over a 525d.

The 525d is fast enough, considering the fastest you can drive legally is 90km/h, and you get sent to prison for speeding.

No idea if it was his first offence, but I know of someone who got locked up for 6 months and received a 2 year ban for doing 150 km/h..

So you didnt mean you go to prison for speeding, you mean you go to prison for doing nearly double the speed limit.

Slight difference there.

Not really.
I was caught at nearly double the limit (temporary roadworks), and what was the offence?

Speeding.

If I was driving everywhere at 120mph I would expect to get in trouble too.
Who's mentioned 120 mph?

The bloke in Norway wasn't even doing a ton in the equivalent of a 50. (But then all roads are max 90 km/h outside of built-up areas in Norway, which is pathetic)

I was caught doing the equivalent of just under 80 in a 40. Expecting a 2 week ban at the most with a fine.
