You telling me there is no cure for the common cold !

But they'd make a bomb from the cure. They can always market other remedies for other ailments that don't work.

Not as much as from the preventatives you have one cure yet about 10 different preventatives that you can safely use at one time here's the math.

1 x cure = **** load of money once.

10 x preventatives = **** loads more money and can be sold again and again

If you were a pharmaceutical bigwig who only cared about how much profit you could make from what you sell which seems to be the more tempting business plan?

The OP should be thankful he only has a cold...I caught the SARS virus some years ago when I visited Hong Kong! The first outbreak was of all places in the hotel where I was staying! Now that was nasty!

As for a cure for the common cold...very difficult to eradicate something that as already pointed out, mutates! I was lucky ( or unlucky, depending upon how one views it) with the SARS virus as it was the early strain that I caught. Later variants killed many people ( around 4% of all who caught it).

It certainly wouldn't be in the pharaceutical company's interests to eradicate it even if there was cure as it would mean billions of lost revenue annually!

Over the counter remedies will undoubtedly alleviate the symptoms but it's the body's immune system that does the serious stuff!

you ever read the active ingredients in something like lemsip? lol
paracetamol (500mg), phenylephrine (6.1mg) and caffeine (25mg).

lemsip arent exactly cheap either you may aswell buy a pack of lockets , some paracetamol and a can of redbull it probably works out cheaper and does the same thing

phenylephrine is a pretty weak decongestant compared to pseudoephedrine IME, the latter has far stronger effects and lasts much longer too. Behind the counter Sudafed from a pharmacy has psuedoephedrine, in front of counter stuff is phenylephrine.

The vast majority of the products used for colds are also marketed towards influenza as well, so you wouldn't lose the whole revenue stream.

It probably wouldn't be financially worthwhile investing billions into finding a possible candidate for a drug to cure the common cold. Combine that with the fact it might not make all that money back, it's not worthwhile developing it.

Developing new drugs is not an easy process, and I think OP if you understood this process, you'd understand how it works in the pharmaceutical world.

best prevention is to keep away from skanky sniffing sneezing coughing people. if everyone quarenteened themself it could be erradicated, but nooo they all goto work, shops, pubs, school and give it to everyone else  dirty selfish ****s

More silly and unfounded conspiracy theories.

Medicine world has cured many things and guess what still do because it's a great money maker. Most cold remedies are nothing more than aspirin/paracetamol and caffeine. Which you need for aches and pain. Cures cost a lot and every new born needs it unless you can get rid of it entirely.

I no longer use any 'cold' remedies if I get a cold. I don't find they help at all and they taste of donkey! I'll take the Vitamin C + Zinc effervescent and aspirin is all, and honey and hot chocolate just for the temporary soothing action.

Those throat lozenges with antiseptic, how are they supposed to work? It'll be a completely non-selective chemical that tries to neutralize any bacteria, so surely just as it tries to neutralise the cold virus it'll too neutralise the antibodies that you are producing to do that very job? I don't know, always seemed to get quicker faster after ditching them, and I suppose a drug which can prolong an illness slightly whilst sounding good is in the interests of any company producing them.

The throat spray things work but only if used very early on, they help disrupt the ability to spread giving the boady time to fight.
Lozengers do nothing apart from pain relief.

Even tho there is no cure I recommend you go vitamin C crazy it helps fight it and its the one vitamin you cannot overdose on. Keep yer fluids up also.

So where did the vitamin C-cold connection start? It all stems from Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist who lived from 1901 to 1994. In 1970 he wrote the book "Vitamin C and the Common Cold," which popularized the notion that this particular vitamin could prevent one of the most common ailments on earth. But the book came with little scientific backing and was largely devoid of evidence, says Pauling biographer Thomas Hager. "He published this very influential health book without writing a single scientific paper on the subject," he says. "He seemed to be prescribing a major change in dietary habits without much evidence." Nonetheless, the book's message stuck.
