Homeplug Speed Loss

I have just been upgraded to BT Infinity and on my computer connected directly to the router via ethernet I can get 28mbps down and 7mbps up. However, on my computers connected around the house via homeplugs over the mains I am only receiving 6-7mbps down and 4mbps up. Is this speed loss to be expected or are there any homeplugs that will give me closer to the 28mbps?

I am using Netgear XE104 85mbps homeplugs.

Cheers

Are all the electrics in the house new? Also, are they all on the same ring main or seperate?

Also, if you have them in extension sockets these can often cause interference so try them directly in the wall socket.

Might also be worth having a punt at different plugs rated 200mbps?

I think they are all one one ring and but not all of the electrics in the house are new :(. I was thinking of the 200mbps plugs but am I really likely to see a performance increase as technically I shouldn't be maxing my ones out?

Just looked at a similar utility for my Devolo 200's - showing 194 and 189 Mbits

Why are your showing half the rated speed ?

Try different sockets, are they plugged into extension leads ?

(bit tin foilish with the MAC's LOL!)

Have you tried removing a couple of the homeplugs or swapping them around, so the only ones plugged in are the router and PC running the speed test?

Even when my 85Mb/s plugs were showing close to 85Mb/s syncs in the utility, I never used to get more than about 15Mb/s actual throughput (not quite enough to stream 1080p x264's), so i'm not surprised that your "40"Mb/s sync only yields 6-7.
My 200Mb/s set of TP-Links is far better, in the same sockets I get around 90Mb/s actual throughput.

I just unplugged all the home plugs except for the one in my PC and the one in the router and I still only get around 40mbps in the utility app and my internet speeds haven't changed. Do you guys think that buying some 200mbps homeplugs would make a difference?

Cheers

As said above, they certainly made a difference for me - but my link is quite high quality with both 85 and 200mb/s sets achieving close to their maximum sync according to the utility. I wouldn't put money on performance scaling linearly with line quality though.

However I've seen my set online for £35 recently so worth a go, can always sell them on.

Try some different sockets, If I use a socket a couple of meters away on an adjoining wall in one room my speeds plummet.

I gave up on my homeplugs
They just could not deliver good speeds all the time

They do make nice paper weights tho

Well, after discussing with my parents, I have found that actually my circuit is different to the one upstairs and wifi is a no no because my room is in the cellar and the walls are thick down here meaning I get only 2-3mbps. I have chosen (hopefully assuming everyone in the house agrees) that I will run a 20m ethernet cable outside the house and down to my room. I will then use a switch to split the signal :)

Lets just hope I don't ruin the window frames while drilling lol.
