Roaccutane / accutane

had it when i was 15.. 20mg per day and worked well

stopped.

acne came back.

2nd course of roaccutane when i was 16-17 or so had no effect, not even side effects, the 1st time i had dry lips, however the 2nd time, absolutely nothing (80mg per day)

Crazy immune system is a big problem

i was on Roaccutane for a few months, amazing stuff, within a few weeks spots were pretty much all gone and now 3 years on, not a spot

What's people thought's on this and their age?

Coming up to 23 and still get the spots, been on oxytetracycline since school and before that tried various potions and lotions doctor gave me.

I doubt I could go on it currently due to liver problems, but may keep it in mind.

I was on it when I was 17/18. It literally cleared up my face from painful pizza to clear and zit-free in 6 months. I didn't get a lot of the side effects. Bit of a dry face/lips and my skin was a bit redder than normal. I remember having one unexpected nosebleed. I don't remember any joint pains but I used to use the gym when I was that age. Don't remember any depression, but it was probably offset by finally getting rid of the pustulous boils all over my face :)

Just make sure it is acne that you suffer from.

My gf was prescribed this in her early 20s, and it almost killed her. She wasn't suffering from acne, but from a symptom of PCOS. Obviously that's a moot warning to guys, but just thought I'd mention it.

Your skin can produce vitamin D in sunlight, and it doesn't need all that much exposure to produce sufficient amounts of it. Still, eating something like sardines, a food unusually high in vitamin D (and other good stuff!) weekly is certainly not a bad idea!

Vitamin E, however, can be almost completely absent from a persons diet and I would guess most people don't get nearly the RDA of it. The primary source for many will probably be fortified spreads like Flora! The only food I know of that has a good amount for reasonable serving size is hazelnuts. Since vitamin E is important to maintaining healthy skin, and can so easily be lacking in a persons diet, I wonder if anyone with skin conditions has reported improvement after taking supplements (Alpha tocopherol)?
Roaccutane was quite new when I went on it and before I did, I tried supplements. I tried courses of excess vitamin D and E and another supplement which I forget, but none of them helped. It also didn't make much difference what I ate.

Topical creams like Quinoderm et al. generally used to make it worse, as did going out in the sun which would make it flare up. It's amazing they still make Quinoderm - it's one of the original survivors!

I was on roacctuane when I was younger (in'96) can't remember the dose but I don't recall it having any effects on me apart from clearing up my goddamn awful acne. I have old photos I'd rather forget about but it did the job. One side effect for me was that it said "do not consume alcohol", two months later I went to Uni and that went down the pan. I stuck to the roacctuane (and beer) and the side effect of it when I came off it was that I had developed and insanely high tolerance to beer (which has now worn off with age :( )

right, as I previously mentioned - I was due to start my course of Roaccutane in December but didn't due to family problems etc. I'm going to start it tomorrow. I was prescribed 90mg per day and was just wondering how I should take this? Should I take 4x 20mg tablets throughout the day and then 1x 10mg tablet? Looking for general advice here, not medical advice :D

The after pic was actually still while on it, hence why my lips look incredibly rough and dry, must have been coming towards the end of the 'course' when I took that.

I look absolutely shocking in the first pic and not just because of acne! I was never actually depressed, just looked pure miserable.

Sigh

Appointment tomorrow and my skin looks better than it has in ages...and I've been drinking milk which 99% of the time breaks me out :\

Going to take a picture with me of how bad it gets.

I went on this when I was 17 for about 8 or 9 months I think, on a very strong dose. Dont ask me what the dose was as i can't remember. My skin used to be hideous.

Suffered plenty of side effects like dry skin, headaches, nosebleeds, strange appetites.

Skin was loads better better afterwards so it was well worth it. Now I'm 21 and I've noticed the spots coming back, although nowhere near as bad as I used to be!

Dont worry to much they will be able to see the history if your skin. Trust me if its bad they will prescribe it to you :)

Finally prescribed roaccutane today :)

My original referral was to a standard GP then I had to wait another 4 weeks for a further referral...

Apologies as I cba to read the thread aside from the OP.

I had the drug when I was in 6th form.
It gave mne very dry skin, so much so that opening my mouth to bite toast would split my lip. Plenty of nose bleeds too.

....but all that is temporary and is nothing compared to getting rid of those ****ing spots. My goodness they were irritating!

My advice? If your doctor offers you it, go for it.

I'm 28 bro and I still have issues with my face from time to time. If I'm stressed/not sleeping/being lazy, eating badly etc. I use 'Quinoderm' (5% benzoyl peroxide) cream. £3-4 from the pharmacy, no presciption, and it works great for me. I use it if I need to and it's usually cleared up in 2-3 days. There's a stronger one too. Worth a go for £3 imo.
I would also recommend benzoyl peroxide before going for accutane.

I find benzoyl peroxide works for me, just don't over-do it if you haven't used it before, it's better to use a little at first if you can, as if you use too much it dries out your skin.

I find sunlight helps a lot also...

It would be nice if you could update thread with pics at intervals.

Or keep them, and do an update in 6 months or so.

I was lucky, i never got them on my face. But neck and shoulders  I got spots on my face, but nothing major. I am 30 EDIT 29 ;) and still get them.

But i am changing my diet again to see if helps :D
Good luck OP!

Just started on this yesterday after other treatments not working and having a biopsy to find which treatment would be best.

Looking forward to seeing if it works.....not looking forward to the side effects as much though.
