To stay in Uni, or not to stay in Uni

So, I have a decision to be made: Do I continue on my current degree (Computer Sciences), or do I move onto other ventures?

Okays so lets cover some key points against me staying:

- The original tutor who designed the degree was fired (Allowing cheating)
- 60% of people on the course are idiots, and regularly cheat (If Cisco decided to take action, ALL of us would loose our Cisco Quals)
- Some of the coursework units are full of crap: A perfect example is one about decorating a house (Not even joking)
- The Uni has not considered how much time is needed to complete the external units (Cisco CCNP: Yes, It's VERY hard) and as such everyone regularly misses deadlines.
- I've only completed the first year (paid for second, but I'm on extended leave) so the monetary loss is still low.

There's a load of other stuff too but they are the main points. I have until Thrusday to decide....opinions?

Quit. Computers is not a fun degree to at uni tbh.

Did my first year then completely changed careers. Never looked back.

The general social etiquette of people on computing degrees is just odd.

I agree with every point. I have been looking at other possible degree paths, was thinking towards Physics (Was always pretty good, even wrote half a unit for a friends physics foundation degree)

bearing in mind increased payment for fees you won't be able to get a student loan if you start another degree as you've got payment for this one, I'm presuming you got a student loan this year

Getting kicked out of uni was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. So that's my opinion. Quit.

Yer I took loans for both years. My household income is less than £12k so I'm eligible for loans each year (Unless out new government has messed that up too)

What is so bad with Computer Science? Is it the tutor or the coursework being taught?

Surely it isn't that bad?

To be honest in the three months I've been out of Uni I've been remarkably happy...or it might be making artificial flowers with strong solvents I forget

The fees won't have been paid for next year yet, so he should be able to change, although it will be a hassle certainly.

Physics is good also, its one degree where computer science knowledge can actually come in useful

Do a degree in something you enjoy, this will decrease the last minute rushes, thus giving you more free time, allowing you to do stuff to further enhance your employability.

I was about to post something similar. Due to the tuition fee rise, changing your course or quitting to then go back at a later date could potentially be either insanely expensive or completely unrealistic financially. Either way pretty ****.

dont quit just change course. seriously i did comp sci at uni (brookes) and it was ****ing horrible...stupid tutors, stupid lecture setup - the whole thing was one big joke after another. luckily i got through after 3 years but I seriosuly wish id swtiched after year 1.

so see if you can change course/start from scratch.you may have credits available from year1 that can make things easier.

Well the original tutor got fired last year for openly giving answers to exams, now we have a much more "Real World" tutor who has just moved from a senior network manager with the NHS into the education sector so he is brilliant. However, the coursework units from some of the other tutors simply have no place on a computer sciences degree and it drags the whole course down.

I could start the course again at Leeds Met, as they are the ones who wrote 50% of this degree in the first place*

* I attend Hull College for this degree as it is one of the few Cisco Accedemies within a sensible distance. The College is trying to gain University status so they can write their own degree material, and they write 50% of a degree they want to teach and then get graded on the 50% they write.

Ah I guess it isn't so much the course itself but the people involved/your uni.

Which uni are you with?

I am about to begin a Computer Science course at Cardiff in September as a mature student.

Me, along with one other person. We where the only two who have spent a few grand on out Cisco qualifications, and loosing all that to some morons who don't even belong on the course wan't an option so we reported it.
