is there anything better than a ThermalRight Ultra 120 eXtreme?

I think the effectiveness of any heatsink also depends on the fans attached to it. For example

My Thermalright IFX-14 which is the ancestor of Thermalright Silver Arrow and Cogage Arrow comes as a heatsink and more or less similar in size and design compared to the latter 2.
Now I have attached Akasa Vipers onto it and it gives superb performance and is a high-end cooler.

Likewise if you attach Akasa Vipers which are known to be one of the best 120mm fans onto Noctua NH-D14, I am sure it's performance will increase even further over the stock fans:).

Same thing can also be said about Megahalems (infact many forum members are also using Akasa Vipers on it) and Silver Arrow. Attach slow fans onto these and their performance will decrease. Attach faster fans and likewise performance will increase:cool:.

Edit: Passively any heatsink is only as effective as it's design allows. Once you start getting high temps, then fast efficient fans are needed with high airflow (or cfm) :)

so the Akasa Vipers are the best fans?

Imo they are one of the best 120mm fans and produce a high airflow of 83.63cfm.

Many people say that the airflow values provided by manufacturer aren't to be taken seriously but in Viper case I think Akasa being a respectable company are telling the truth. It can go up to 1900 RPM and slightly more and at full or near full speed, they sound like mini-jet engines but this is also telling you that they are pulling lots of air in. Besides if you look closely at the fan blades, they resemble fan blades of jet engines.

Most of 120mm fans I have seen are mainly in 56-65cfm region.

I think the other ones are scythe series IIRC.

I think the main competitor to Akasa Viper is Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm 2000 Rpm fan or the Scythe Kaze Jyuni 1900RPM Slip Stream 120mm Fan

Using x3 Vipers on my 360 Rad cooling a 920 > 4.2GHz / 470 > 850:1700:2000 both heaverly overclocked, the Vipers peak at 1450rpm in pull with shrouds CPU never went over 70'c and gpu 52'c gaming and general use.

Vipers ----> :D

Hehe yeah. Not many people have tried it but I was amazed by the results! It's better than some air coolers than come with fans!

Yeah noise is a big factor when choosing a cooler, so having no fan or a low RPM is a great option.

Also for anyone that thinks it can't cool at high clock speeds, here's someone thats got it to 5GHz :

Having owned a TRUE, (now on a prolimatech super mega). The difference between both coolers was so small, 1c in favour of the TRUE. Used a mixture of different fans on both, finally settled on akasa vipers. Great cooling, but jeez theyre a vile colour.

Agreed. Dunno what possessed akasa to have yellow fans. Blue, red or white or black but not puke yellow :S

Noctua are the same. I would wage there sales would rocket if they just changed the brown fans for something more appealing.

Im actually considering spraying the blades of my vipers with dark blue. Gpu pcb's are blue, psu has black and blue. The garish yellow stands out like a sore thumb. Hopefully paint wont effect the performance of the fan blades.

Lol I am shocked:eek:.

So it seems most of the fans have max airflow of between 20cfm and 40cfm with akasa viper falling roughly in the middle at around 31cfm at 12v:(. Is this the only comprehensive review of the fans? Would there be other sites aswell who reviewed viper and other fans?

I must still say that at full speed vipers do seem to generate lots of airflow when I place my hand behind the fan. I can feel the strength of airflow movement.
