E8400 time to step up?

you had issues playing counter strike? with a 460? hardly a CPU intensive game though?

that made me lol

to OP i still use my e8600 at stock speed with and ATi 4870X2 @ 1900x1200 res and haven't found any reason to upgrade tbh. most games are console ports anyway so not as demanding as some make em out to be - in fact crysis 2 is less of a hog than original crysis was when it was released, (haven't played in a while maybe patches have optimized it better though)

so don't upgrade because you read these forums, only do it because you have a real issue. if you get a sandy bridge (which is a a great chip i have no doubt) it will be old tech in a few months when ivy bridge is out later this year, then haslemere, it just goes on.

conslusion - if you are struggling then upgrade, if not wait until you reach that point. in meantime save your money or spend on something else ;)

I also went from E8400 @ 4ghz and saw a big step up. I was playing CSS at 1080p with gtx 460 and it was stuttery, all that went once I upgraded to 2500k.

I think CSS is a CPU heavy game and it really improved the smoothness of gaming for me :)

CS:S only uses one Core. :)

Hi guys , new to the forum so be gentle with me. ;)

I have an e8400 running at 3.6ghz but i cant help thinking im missing out so is it time to upgrade from socket 775? Gaming is the most intensive thing i do at a resolution of 1680 x 1050.
my pc
ASUS P5K PREIMIUM
4GB DDR2 800MHZ OCZ PLATINUM
E8400 @ 3.6ghz
1gb GIGABYTE GTX 460 OVERCLOCKED
SCYTHE MURGEN COOLER
2 X SAMSUNG SSD RAID 0
THERMALRITGHT TOUGHPOPWER 700W PSU

almost the same setup as me, but I have no problem gaming with a 5850. Just upgrade the gpu.

Close thread?! Not until you tell us how you're liking the upgrade, mister! And if you didn't at least consider running and posting benchmark comparisons; no soup for you!

:p
