Hi, looking for a new monitor but not sure if this is any better than my current one! At the moment I have a Samsung SyncMaster 223BW. How do these compare?

It looks like a decent monitor - but not much better than the 223BW. Its the same TN panel type, same size, similar responsiveness and same 1680x1050 resolution.

If you are buying something new you may want to consider a larger 1920x1080 resolution monitor, try out 120Hz or go for an IPS.

May I ask what your budget is?

Ideally £150 or about that mark is my budget!

Righto, for that money you can get a 24in (16:9) 1920x1080 (1080p) monitor like this. You can also get this 25in for similar money, but imho the brand isn't quite as good.

You can also get a 120Hz, 23in monitor like the LG W2363D-PF for £175 if you shop around. This seems to be an excellent monitor for the price and ideal if you are doing a fair bit of gaming.

As for IPS, if you are prepared to go for a refurb (with 1 year warranty) you can get the excellent Dell 2209WA for this kind of money. This isn't any bigger or higher resolution than your samsung, but it uses an excellent E-IPS panel (the samsung and all the other monitors mentioned above use cheaper TN panels) which really makes the image quality and viewing angles a step above. The Dell U2311H is the newer, larger, higher resoution version of the 2209WA -looking at this review its an excellent bit of kit (again it uses an E-IPS panel), it also has a displayport input. However, it is a fair bit over budget at £222 on OCUK at the minute.

Ah, if you are trying to do a triple monitor setup then I squarely throw my weight behind the Dell 2209WA. It is the same resolution (1680x1050), size (22in) and aspect ratio (16:10). Hence it will match very well with your existing monitor. If you are doing web design then the IPS panel will be a big boost as you can achieve very accurate colours and the colours don't shift when you move your head.

My sister has one of these 2209WA monitors and she loves it. It really is a quality piece of kit and excellent in general use. Here is an in-depth review of the 2209WA (please note that that review model is silver - but it does come in black also).

The problem with other monitors is that these days 16:10 1680x1050 monitors are almost extinct. They have been replaced largely by 16:9 1920x1080 monitors, hence they won't "match" with your existing monitor (which is still rather nice). Also, because of the aspect ratio changes - you don't often find a 22in monitor. For example that BX2235 is actually a 21.5in monitor - so it will be significantly less tall that your existing monitor and a bit wider. That said, it is a good monitor (for a TN panel) and if you feel that size is OK then it is a good pick.

Hi there,

I'd be happy to help, but could you make your own thread and delete the above post as it really isn't anything to do with lolage's thread?

When you make the new thread I will try and give you as much help as possible. I would recommend posting in the "General Hardware" section, as this is an issue with getting a new PC to work.

hi,
im sorry about that, i dont really know how to use this forum, ill be sure to post it in general hardware as soon as i can figure out how to delete it off this thread.
