how many sick days is too many or too often?

If you haven't got the confidence to stay off work when you are on the verge of passing out, that's your own issue. You are an adult and companies have sickness policies for a reason and self-certification is there for a reason.

Abuse it at your peril but for the love of god don't think you have to go in to work to be inspected by your boss and given approval to go home. That's ridiculous.

That.

I mean dont go in if youre ill, if you have something contagious would you rather spread it about?

Oh I havent had a sick day in 10 years, really. Honestly, does that win you an award, do you think it will get you hired over someone else with more skills when applying for a job?

Granted if you were taking the **** with sickness it would be an issue but the odd occasion every year, I dont think people will care.

Been at my current job eight days and yesterday and today I've felt like death but I thought it'd be best to make an effort to show up for work. I only work part time and it's only four hours a day though so I think I'll just battle through it unless they send me home.

A guy at my place had a bicycle accident (not his fault). He had 30 days off (not paid) from work due to rehabilitation he was going to every day. Nuff said, he was the only one not getting a pay rise from this department.

I really hate people who come in sick and spread it. Our place is open plan but with a really innefective air circulation system and in the 20 months I have been there I have been ill loads. Not gone off sick with it though but really getting fed up of it all.

There are no words that describe the amount of irony in this post. Does not compute :D

Why didn't he get sick pay and why didn't he get a pay rise?

when i was younger i worked in a factory and had 2 sick days. about a year later they were laying off and used a point system. i survived the first wave of lay off but knew there was another one comming and knew more sick days would be held against me. one day i got the runs and couldnt get off the toilet and work was 9 mile drive. i raced to work, clocked in. and sat on the toilet for a straight 8 hours lol. they said i could go home and lose half day pay. money was tight back then so i just stayed there and i think i got an hours over time as well LOL!.

Never had a day off sick in 13 school years, 4 university years and 3 working years. Even managed to get appendicitis during a summer holiday and glandular fever during an Easter.

I'm not saying I don't get ill, just never ill enough to stop me from working. I'd be bored sat at home all day too...

I've been working in my job since december. And I've had 7 days off sick. I had REAL Flu though. The wish you were dead, cant move out of bed, body feels like its weighed down with lead, Kind of flu.

I had to take 3 weeks off when I had real flu. I actually thought I was going to die.

I'm glad work over here is flexible enough to accommodate illness such as that.

Working in the public sector you're on about, I can back it up.

I see it like this (locally):

You get people who are "fit" to work in the private sector, their sick leave rate = not much difference. Looking at the figures, an average of 3-5 days off sick.

You get people who could not be arsed with the private sector, their sick leave rate = absolutely immense. Again, quick look at figures, anything between 18 days to....48 days

14 people in my particular dept. I'd say 3/4 of them are huge abusers of doctors sympathy, if you get me.

(btw, 10 years, 20 sick days in total. I'll echo the sentiments about having kids and getting ill too...)

Difference being that most probably they don't get paid for the sickness, were as in the public sector its paid no question askd
Usl are thought to be annual leave too:o:rolleyes:

Because we are a privately owned company, luckily we get 5 paid sick days per year. Some people get pay rises some don't.

thats not an answer.
Are you telling me that people are randomly given a pay rise? or being genuinely ill is seen as a reason to not have a pay rise?

Yes, this is the way it is where I work. This guys has been here for 5 years now.

I'm looking for another job at the moment because I can't take all the b...... that is happening around me anymore.

Anyway what can you do in a private company? You really have not much option do you apart from looking for another job, mind you we are a small company and only have about 60 employees.

I don't really get how some people can have loads of sick days yet others hardly any or none at all. Is it really that random or is there something about those who take sickies quite a lot...

This is the most stupid thing I've seen you type yet.

As an employer it is hard to put a figure on what is acceptable.
Much depends on what has happened in the past, if they have had someone taking the p*** before they may not be inclined to be as tollerant.

I tend to get a gut feeling if someone is genuine.

I have just had to let someone go because the had 3 days off in the first 3 weeks of employment. Plus he wasn't entirely honest about his previous state of health.:(

I would just try extra hard not to be off for some thing really minor like a headache no matter how bad, make the effort to show your boss you are trying.

To a point yeah, But i really do think some people throw in sick days because they just cant be assed working. For instance, I wont miss work for a cold, hangover or just something i can work through. I've even worked with food poisoning before, although Visited the bathroom often! :p TMI?

Others will have the day off for a cold.

I guess its what people are willing to work with.

Some of these comments...

I had to read it twice :p

Anyway, the majority of people I've known at places of work used to take sickies for one of 3 reasons, it probably applies to most people in any environment too.

1: Job Interview
2: Hungover
3: Genuinely sick

I don't know of anyone at any place yet who just takes a sick day because they could not be arsed to work although all my workplaces have had a good atmosphere and people you work with have been sound so nobody had reason to pull a CBAday on the whole.

An employer I interviewed for once told me he expects people who call in sick to be sick for 2 or 3 days, not a single random day because most people aren't fully recovered if they're genuinely sick and that those single days raise flags! (such as point 1 & 2 above).
