how many sick days is too many or too often?

Yes, this is the way it is where I work. This guys has been here for 5 years now.

I'm looking for another job at the moment because I can't take all the b...... that is happening around me anymore.

Anyway what can you do in a private company? You really have not much option do you apart from looking for another job, mind you we are a small company and only have about 60 employees.

So what happens when a pot of money is allocated for pay rises. The management say "i like him, her and those 3, they can have a rise" and the rest get nothing regardless of performance?
Remember that giving nothing is like saying "you are worth less to us now than last year".

All I know is that it is for the MD (owner) to decide who gets a pay rise and how much. So basically if the MD likes you and the managers that run around MD all the time like you too you have a chance of a pay rise, otherwise forget it.

2: Hungover

I don't know of anyone at any place yet who just takes a sick day because they could not be arsed to work although all my workplaces have had a good atmosphere and people you work with have been sound so nobody had reason to pull a CBAday on the whole.
#2 can lead to a CBA day which is why I will never ever call in sick on a monday morning.

Nothing wrong going on sick.

If you know how the System works and you know how to play around with it, Company can't do jack all about it as long you play your cards right.

Where i work, Managers, big bosses try the best to have me, but i know how the system works, so they just move on untill the day i mess up which wont happen as i've been doing it for the last 9 years.

Sucks :(

had a month off then i was on crutches with torn knee legiments :( to which i got the standard SSP (which isnt worth a carrot)

maybe a couple of sick days, been sent home once. (over a 5 year period)

I think its all relative if you are sick...I used to work with food and if someone had a bit of a cold you were not aloud to come in. I think this is right i wouldnt want someone who is ill touching my food.

I had a lot more sick days back then because I wasnt aloud to 'just get on with it' as i do now. Plus it normally cost you too as you would get laid off for the following day. :(

Depends on the job and how ill you feel though, surely?

I would go in and get sent home which I had done before but sometimes you know its quite bad and you cant soldier through it.

It's all very well and good saying 'I always drag myself into work even when feeling like death warmed up', but there are jobs you can get away with doing that and some you can't. Friend of mine works as a mechanic, he could probably turn upto work and no-one would notice if he went for a snooze!

Like i said earlier I haven't had one day off sick since September 88 so that's about 22.5 years but I've been lucky with the jobs that I've had.
Of course I've gone in feeling like poo but I've always been able to do my job at the time.
I could look over at the next person and realise that I couldn't do that while ill.

Not necessarily.
We have a Counsellor in Stoke who was my workmate and fellow Union Man on Creda/Hotpoint.
One day around 1990 we were called to sort out a new sick day structure and he was smirking all the way through.
When we came out I asked him what he was smirking and he declared 'With this piece of paper in my hand I know exactly how much time to have off and when" - and he did.
It was around 2005 when he knew he was on his last warning for the umpteenth time over 15 years but this time he couldn't last 3 months fully working to roll his credit back and he became proper sick and was sacked.
I had no respect for him or people like Sho above but if you can get away with it then go for it.

thanks guys been quite a popular thread ^^. I spoke to the guy today and he just explained that i think your genuine but we do have company policy. I just hope i am not ill again within the next 5 months so i get my pay rise xD

Where I work, more than three sickness absences in a rolling six month period will likely see you put on attendance monitoring and I believe that includes sick time certified by your doctor. They also reserve the right to send you to the company doctor if you are off for more than seven consecutive days.

My last sick day was well over a year ago when I had a migraine and took a codeine based painkiller for it. As my post is "safety critical" you cannot return to work within 48 hours of taking codeine (24 hours for "drowsy" anti-histamine) or you risk failing a drug test if you needed to be "screened" for any reason.

There is a slight irony in that, of course as who is going to perform better? The guy kept awake all night with a heavy cold because he can't take anything for it and struggles into work the next morning because he may already have had two sickies in less than six months. Or someone who had a good night's sleep, feels much better but has a microdot of codeine in their system? Still, rules is rules on that one.

The last casual sickie I took is years ago. It probably helps that I work in a job I enjoy, where the pay is good and you feel part of a team. Also, if anyone goes off sick it means trying to cover on overtime or rest day worked (which fortunately we still get paid for) or worse the job going uncovered which then gives management ammunition to cut it out at the next reorg.
