How old are the kids? You could buy a pair of baseball bats, baseball and catchers mitts and should you ever have to whack anyone with one of the bats argue they were to hand as the kids left them on the landing or something.

Think about your family first

If anyone tried to rob my house or any member of my family I would use all at my disposal.
And being a firearms holder it would be a lot.
Of course one would not run down stairs and blast them, but if met with violent force you then can defend yourself and I can say they would not make it up the staircase if challanged and they persisted.

So you'd wake up, go to your hiding place for your cabinet keys and get them out. Open your main cabinet, noisily, then get the next key, open the ammo box, and in the dark (without having practiced this most likely) get the correct ammunition for the gun (bearing in mind you may have more then 1 caliber of ammo) and load the gun, possibly via loading the mag first?

Remember, the only reason Tony Martin got a shot or 2 off was because he kept a loaded shotgun, outside of the cabinet under his bed 'at the ready'.

Got a load of ice hockey sticks in the wardrobe as it's where I genuinely keep them.

Most are broken and would probably just snap if you tried to hit something with them though, although the old aluminium ones would probably hold up nicely.

Not that I'd ever do that, I'd be too busy hiding under the covers.

Yes, really. According to the CPS, the home office and the police. It makes sense:

Predicate: You are allowed to use reasonable force to counter an immediate threat.

Predicate: An instruder in your house is an immediate threat.

Conclusion: You are allowed to use reasonable force against an intruder in your house on sight. Since their presence is a threat, it isn't necessary for them to make any additional threats - they have already made a threat by their intrusion.
