Just wondering... why do mods prefer to ban straight away rather than issuing infractions to warn the poster?

It depends on the offence, some are worthy of a suspension, some an infraction is more suitable (i.e. first minor offence, like not posting a pic in random image thread, or a mildly inappropriate message etc...) full on swearing or personal attack warrants more than a suspension.

Ultimately it's down to the moderator's discretion and what is appropriate within the circumstance at the time.
