I'm off to Spain next month and as part of my proposal plans i'm planning on getting some Champagne glasses engraved.

We're only going for a few days so are just taking hand luggage. What are the chances of being allowed to take the glasses as part of my hand luggage? I've read on the Manchester Airport website of the various restrictions and can't see anything about glass but the last thing i want is to be stood at security next to my girlfriend as they pull these glasses out and start asking questions!

I also can't seem to find a suitable contact number within the airport to ring.

Have you tried ringing up Manchester Airport and ask them over the phone?

I doubt it though. They dont allow a bottle of water...

I don't see why it shouldn't be okay. Best to check though as you said, you don't want them getting the glasses out to inspect them.

A glass can readily be broken to form a sharp thing. On that wholly rational basis I imagine they won't be allowed.

 You could beat someone over the head with an ipad if you wanted to, a large key could give someone a nasty injury if you stabbed someone with enough force, you could strangle someone with a USB cable... You have to draw the line somewhere, I'm pretty sure glass doesn't get included in the "sharp or dangerous" list of any airport I've been to.

On the TSA website I couldn't for the life of my understand this..

"Gel shoe inserts - Gel shoe inserts are not permitted, but shoes constructed with gel heels are allowed and must be removed and screened."

I thought gel inserts would have been exactly like rubber. Unless they're made from flammable ingredients.

Hey, don't roll your eyes at me. I don't make the stupid rules. You're happy with no liquids because someone might perform chemical wizardry in the toilet, but you think it's stupid that they might ban something that could actually be used as a weapon?

Also on that note but not 100% certain you may be able to buy glass bottles inside the airport which could also be used to kill someone. I'm flying out of Manchester on Saturday, i'll have a look round for any glass bottles.

Anyway. Googling suggests it'll be OK, but if they're lead crystal then you'd best be prepared to unwrap them as they'll be opaque in the X-Ray machine.

You could try telling her you're going ahead seperately to buy her another surprise, and go through Security before she does?
