Nikon updates their nifty 50

Ooo interesting, I wonder what the pricing will be like. I imagine a fair bit more than the current 50mm

It wouldnt make much sense if its that much more expensive as it ll be priced too closely to the 1.4G surely? I think the main point of this update is to allow AF on motorless bodies.

Bingo, its been said numerous times now that Nikon are (slowly) upgrading all their popular "cheaper end" lenses to have on lens AF to make them support fully with entry level DX body's.

Doesn't look cheap does it?? 58mm filter thread and f16 not f22. Oh well...

why would it be expensive, the 1.4G is pretty cheap and this new 1.8G will have to be a lot less.
furthermor,e the orgional 1.8D was very cheap and adding AF-S in such a lens is very cheap.

I expect it to be more epensive than the 1.8D, the 35.18 DX would give a good indicator.

It has gained an aspherical element and the MTF looks to be better. Shame about the 58mm filter thread, a 52mm filter thread would've been preferable...might be borrowed parts from the 50/1.4G that led to the increased filter size.

Yes it's unlikely given it's got it's own focusing motor and the current lens is c. £100. Somwhere between £150 and £200 is my bet.

I don't think it will sell too well to be honest, the 50 1.8 is a lens most get as their first prime, but on a crop (i.e. the only bodies where the lack of AF-S was a huge problem) 50's a bit too tight so unless they really bump up the 35mm price (which I think they will do, given the price hike in America, presumably to make room for this) it's going to be outsold by the 35mm as the "first prime", then the 50mm f/1.4g as the second.

Just my opinion, mind, and I'm certainly nowhere near an expert or particularly well informed on this :D

I must admit Canon need to refresh their 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 lenses to ones that are a bit more robust and less prone to breaking, bring back the metal mount of the 1.8 mk1. Proper USM motors and generally upgraded optics. I have owned both of these love the focal length cant afford the 50mm 1.2 and it too has its own problems, its not a surprise that sigma have a big foot hold in this popular focal length. The one thing that puts me off the sigma is the sheer size. perosnally i dont think therer is a need but i may be wrong. I wouldnt worry about an 58mm threaded lenses, its still quite small and pockatable. both the canon 501.4 and 85 1.8 are 58mm lenses and they are not huge nor heavy

I personally think a '50' should be <£100 but don't you think that's unlikely?

why should it be less than £100?

The lens is aimed at people who who an FX full frame camera, if you've shelled out £1.5-6K for a camera body why would you be aiming to buy sub £100 lens?

DX uses have the the 35mm 1.8 which is better suited to the APS-C sensor size.

I'd contest that bit about full frame.

Anyone on full frame will be getting the 50mm f/1.4G, no doubt about it as there aren't any Nikon full frame cameras old enough to be dropping into the price bracket of anyone who'd take the 1.8 over the 1.4.

The 50mm f/1.8 is aimed squarely at crop sensor users of cameras such as the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100 without in-built focus motors, so that Nikon's cheap primes (35mm f/1.8g AF-S, 50mm f/1.8g AF-S) dominate the prime market, in response to Sigma's success with their EX f/1.4 lenses.

I'd be surprised if we don't see an 85mm f/1.8G AF-S before long, to be honest. We're hardly going to be seeing any new Nikon professional lenses soon (Nikonrumours agrees) given the current economic climate and the production situation in Japan.

Unless someone on a crop wants something in the 80-85-90 range (and many do), in which case the 50mm is perfect.

Except you end up at 70mm, which is really a bit too short unless you get close.

The Tamron 60mm 2.0 and Sigma 70mm 2.8 are more interesting.

There are plenty of people using the 50mm 1.8 on FF cameras, don't under estimate the performance of the 50 1.8.

Yes, some some DX users will want the 50mm 1.8G AF-S lens, but it is not targeted towards them, otherwise they would just make a DX lens to save money.

I meant the AF-S part more than the new lens - the main market that hasn't been getting the 50mm f/1.8 so far is the low-end crop sensor users, and that has been due to the lack of AF-S.

Sure, many full frame people use the 50mm 1.8, but I'd be surprised if most of them didn't have the 50mm before they moved up to full frame.

But that's now. Nikon have to plan for what people will buy in the future, not what they have now.
