Refund via different method (ie card -> cash)

No, but frowned upon by companies I would imagine as it means a cloned card can be used to claim clean cash

iceland billed me to much on my card the other day and wanted to give me the 50p as cash...

asked for the manager and it took about 30seconds for her to put the money back on my card.

normally when i give refunds i just do it by cash, but thats only for small amounts. it doesnt take much longer to put it back on the card, im just too lazy to bother. if it was for a lot of money i probably put it back on the card though

Is it illegal to refund a customer via a different method of payment? ie I pay for something by card, and get the refund by cash/cheque/other.

Whilst not "illegal", the shop/suppler will almost certainly be in breach of the terms and conditions of thier merchant account, leaves them open to the transaction becoming fraudulent and will cost them the processing fees of the original transaction.

The main reason for it being a breach of the T&C's of the merchant account is because if the payment was made on a credit card, the transaction is classed as a purchase of goods - when in effect the end user has had a cash advance (normally charged at a higher interest rate with no "free" period).

For this reason, most places will normally only refund to the original source of funding.

It's not illegal as said but most companys don't do it because for the method could be used for money laundering.

some of us try to avoid carrying cash is that a crime...

no, but if you are happy to be perceived as a complete moron by the staff of the store then that's you prerogative...

Things to avoid in life:

walking in front of a bus
guano
anally retentive individuals
fat people in elevators
old people in elevators

Things that aren't worth going to the effort of avoiding:

carrying cash
morons on the internet

you are aware of the type of customers that frequent iceland i assume, those oiks in the super dry jackets who more than likely do not wash their hands after they have been to the toilet, now do you in all honesty expect me to be touching a fifty pence peice that may have been handled by such a savage?

Well, whilst that is one reason. Usually when refunding for over payment via card transaction, it is done for financial records.

Otherwise at the end of the month when someone goes through them and notices 50p is missing from petty cash it may raise some questions later on.

You took the card back after it being handled by at least two of them :p
