Surround Sound System For TV for £150

£150 isn't quite enough to buy a full blown AV receiver & surround speaker kit, so you should be looking at the all-in-one kits like this LG. They'll have a DVD player built in which you probably do need or want, but that's a compromise you'll have to accept unless you're willing to double your budget.

To get TV in surround sound you are looking for a system with a feature called TV-audio. That takes sound via SCART from your TV into the surround kit. You need to check hat your TV has a SCART that will output sound though. Most do, but it's worth looking at the TV manual just to be sure before shelling out some cash.

The LG system I linked to has the feature. It's available for £90 from RS.

when you say 5.1 for your tv ... do you mean to watch tv programmes ? if so your only going to be able to do that if your tv has an optical output of your usign a set-top box that has one. otherwise your limited to 4.1 ( pro-logic ) via phono conenction from the tv

even if you do have an optical output.... finding a 5.1 system that has the input for less than £150 is nigh on impossible ... new anyway :(

dvd with 5.1 speakers systems dont tend to have connections for true 5.1 for tv broadcasts until you hit the £300 mark...

youd be better off getting an onkyo system imo which costs around £300

another option is an all-in-one br system :-

Sony BDVE370.CEK 5.1 ch Blu-Ray Home Cinema System - Black

its on the rainforest/river site for £305 this has all you need to be 5.1 , but like i said , your source must have a digital output to do 5.1

Thanks Very much every one for your input, its greatly appreciated.

I think a friend of mine mentioned that there is a cable that you plug where the headphones are plugged in? i think that is what your talking about Talon?

I am happy to wait till i have a bit more cash, but want to do it right.

With the DVD and surround sound will i be able to watch Movies and sport?

"will i be able to watch Movies and sport?" Why ever not??? If you can hear it through the TV speakers then a suitable surround system properly hooked up will take that sound and spread it across several speakers. Or is that not what you meant?

"a friend of mine mentioned that there is a cable that you plug where the headphones are plugged in?" We here would only recommend that as a last resort type of connection. It's what we would suggest if someone were using cheap PC speakers with no remote control for volume. The quality of sound from a headphone socket isn't the best. Also, plugging in to the socket often mutes the TV speakers. We prefer it where you can choose to use the TV speakers or the surround speakers without cable swapping.

"I am happy to wait till i have a bit more cash, but want to do it right."Set your budget at around £300 and you'll get something substantially better that the LG-type all-in-one kit. It'll be more future-proofed and sound quality will be in a different league.

lol no... it wont be kick arse ... as you can appreciate , the more you spend the better the sound :)

but £300 will get you either a 5.1 system by itself or you can get the sony blu ray all in one system .

either option will sound a lot better than any £150 jobby . you will be impressed i can gaurantee that ... espicially if your coming in from nothing at all :)

Indeed. Well £300.00 it is, you recommended the LG? tbh im not at all fussed about the blue ray player, im quite happy with the DVD player i have. Ill just go for the 5.1. DO you have the link again?

i never recommended an lg

there is an onkyo 5,1 system you can get or theres the sony

btw what dvd player you got ? as unless its expensive the br player will probably kick its arse for dvd play-back

plus it has other features like i-player 5 on demand eurosport

I'd much rather have an Onkyo system than the Sony one that's been mentioned. The all-in-one kits from Sony, Samsung, LG etc that come with DVD/BD players built in are rarely any good. You can get the Onkyo HTS3405 from Richer Sounds for £300, and it'll blow the Sony away in terms of features and audio quality. Granted, it doesn't come with a DVD/Blu-ray player, but ideally you want to be focusing on quality and that's what the Onkyo will provide. The Sony will be quite basic in comparison.

the sony system i mention uses the s370 blu ray player ... which i have and is top in its price range

and i'm sorry .. but the onkyo wont blow the sony away as you put it ....the faeture count on the sony br alone is amazing ... the onkyo might give a betetr sound i'll admit as its a dedicated 5.1 system ....... but all in all the sony would win it for me ..

in fact i only have stereo with my sony s370 atm ... but i use headphones mostly ... if i was picking a system it would be the onkyo as i had a player ......but the sony would win ith otherwise , as the br is good for the money

The S370 can be had for under £90 these days (plus it's discontinued now), so I highly doubt the rest of the system represents £210 worth of value. It'll comprise of tiny basic speakers and a lightweight, half-hollow receiver unit just like every other system in this category.

I had a similar Samsung one before my current Onkyo set-up, and they're so different it's not even funny. The Onkyo actually looks, feels, sounds and behaves as a proper piece of audio equipment, whereas the Samsung was a horribly cheap looking thing in comparison, and lacked even some very basic settings.

If it was £200 or thereabouts for the Sony one, I'd agree that it might be a decent shout, but not for £300. For what you actually get, it's not a fair price.

That's just the speaker package. You need one that comes with the AV receiver, otherwise, you'd have to buy the AV receiver separately. Although, you could buy the speaker package and the AV receiver separately if you wanted.

I think that's the speakers being mentioned though, if that's what you are asking.
