UK video game prices going up

Games may be getting more expensive, but then again everything is. Partly it's due to inflation.

But not only that, the quality of what you're getting is increasing too. A lot of games now have loads of highly skilled people working on them. For example some games have amazing storylines as they get top writers in to do the job. Also in my opinion games are longer these days as well, and some have a lot of replayability etc.

Cheaper than where? Whenever I look at gamestracker.com, supermarkets are always about half way down the list. Online retailers have always been cheaper for the games I haven't bought via Steam.

Other non-online retailers. Didn't you even read the OP?

Average price amongst specialist gaming shops £25.31
Average price amongst supermarkets £23.93
Average price online £22.97

Games are still cheaper than they have ever been I remember paying £40 for Quake 4 when it first came out on PC and don't get me started on how much console games used to be. Even megadrive and snes games used to be about £50-£60 when they first came out and this was twenty years ago:)

Why is it that console games are more exspensive?
I just switched from console gaming and so i'm used to paying 40 - 55 pound on some games.Didnt realise pc games were so cheap otherwise i would have switched years ago! :)

This is because everybody and their gran buys Call of Duty when it is released, often for more than the standard £40. It will go up even more next year as even more people will be buying Modern Warfare 3.

Same, to a lesser extent, with Fifa.

I rarely buy new games on release, there are two main reasons for this being firstly the price and secondly and more importantly I wait to see how the game performs and lives upto the hype.

I generally think most PC gamers are quite prudent when it comes to purchasing software of any type, we also know that games are sold for practically half the original price within a few months thus saving money over the long term.

£20 to £24 for a new game is a perfectly decent price range for 'good' software !

Used to get all my pre-orders from GAME, £39.99 - £44.99 a pop. Now I just go down asda on launch day and pick it up for £25 - £30. Amazing prices, but I don't buy my bread and cheese while I'm there ;)

Games come out at £40, and then you buy them off ebay a few months later for £15, problem solved.

EDIT: Also, it's best not to buy a game on release, because your wasting money, and you should wait to see if the game is any good, what bugs it has, and wait for patches to fix the bugs and problems.

EDIT: I can only ever remember buying a game at full price once in my life, and that was God of War 3 on PS3!! and that just had to happen! That game was epic, proper godlike, one of best games I've ever played...infact I'd say my top 3 games ever are MGS/HL/GoW and in that order.

The main reason is that the console hardware is sold at a loss (ish) and they recoup this with higher games prices. That's why you can't really compare a £200 Xbox 360 to a £200 PC and say that the Xbox is better value and better performer at that price range.

It would be interesting to see what PC + 20 games you could get for the same price as an Xbox + 20 games, assuming that's the lifespan of an average Xbox 360 ...
