I started this thread late last year, about the hikes in insurance premiums, seems it's happening again - so soon. The average fully comprehensive premium is set to reach over £1000 by 2012. Now i've got 5 years NCB, and fair enough, i drive a group 17 car, but i'm paying more now than i did when i passed my test, and my premiums are getting higher rather than discounted - as the NCB is supposed to help do. Now, i'll just take it on the chin and pay my premium because i want my car covered in the event of an accident.

Surely though, these increases are going to cause more people to risk not insuring their cars, particularly if it's a banger that they are driving, especially younger drivers, the fine for being caught driving uninsured is looking to be more desirable than the premiums themselves, (isn't it something daft like a ban and £60 fine or something?)

The result of this, more claims from policy holders own insurance for being hit by an uninsured driver etc, resulting, again, in rising insurance costs, it's an uncontrollable spiral. Where will it end?

Oh and source.

I recently lost my 4 years NCB. I did a quote on my current insurer's website without the NCB and then another quote with the NCB still in place.

....the result... £40 difference.

£40 discount with 4 years NCB. Crazy.

I insure my car as a classic without using any NCB for half what it would be on a normal policy with 5 years NCB.

Go figure.

iirc, owning the same car for over 3 years makes a pretty big difference (in lowering) to your renewal quote

The reason premiums are going up is because of all the insurance scams that are going off ! A friend of mine shunted the car in front of him, He said SORRY my fault and exchanged details etc. His insurance company had a claim for 5 cases of whip lash ! But my mate told them there were only 2 people in the car ? They said it would be cheaper to pay out rather than fight the case WTF!
So we have to foot the bill. What a load of B*LL***S.............

My insurance has gone up by 15% this year, and shopping around only made that figure worse. Same car for 3 years.

My premiums have gone up every year for the last 3 years. Not impressed.

lol how can a ban be more desirable?

A fixed penalty ticket is 6 points and £200 fine. More if you go to court.

All you can do is hope Karma prevails. An aggressive guy in a car accident I was involved in broke his leg a week later in a Rugby match. Whilst I wouldn't wish that on anyone the news put a smile on my face.

Also I wouldn't get worked up about it. The Coalition Government have already taken steps to reverse Labour's purely ideological interference in the legal system which gave birth to these cancerous 'no-win no-fee' legal firms, which fuel far more illegitimate claims then genuine ones relative to usual legal practice. If anyone is interested there's an article in the Economist a month or so ago which goes into quite a bit of detail.

Edit - BBC Article

I am getting insurance quotes to get my car back on the road, I was previously with halifax, and my quote was £487 for a year fully comp with 4 years NCB. I rang them up again, nothing has changed and they want £1,034 now fully comp with exactly the same details!!

I only had insurance with them 4 months ago.

Was quite surprised at my insurance renewal price this year. BMW 530D M Sport etc for £630.

The renewal price is also at least £100 cheaper than anything offered on the price comparison sites.

Just got a quote - my renewal is due in 2 months.

£429, so it's only gone up by 20 quid.

£662 if I change to a Group 19 335i, and £618 for a 330i.

Can't really complain at that.

Interestingly if I get a quote for my current car - which it wants £429 for - but say I have only just bought it, it's £150 more expensive.

Mine was £1,600 last year, and £1,600 this year, would have been £1,400 if someone hadn't decided they thought my back end needed adjusting using the front of their Fiesta.
