The car will be for my wife and I to drive, one child at uni and one going soon means no need for a large sized 4 seater so a mid sized car will do if thats the best bet.
We currently have 2 cars, a Mitsu GTO twin turbo for fun and a W124 1990 mercedes 230E which has been our main car for a loooooong time alongside company cars.

I will not be likely to have a company car again, and travel 65 miles on the daily commute. I am looking for something solid, comfortable, well specced and an expectation to be reasonably reliable. I dont mind petrol or turbo diesel. 2 seaters are out, as are high performance cars, I dont want to spoil going out in the GTO because my daily driver is faster or more capable!!

I prefer german or japanese but open to other makes. Dislike Ford/Vauxhall however. Max budget is 15k but prefer to spend around the 10k mark, especially if 15k just gets me the same model with lower mileage as the 15k car. Prefer mileage to be around 65k max, purely to allow for keeping it for 10 years and running up the miles. If it has the potential to be a long term runner after that and not just fit for scrap, even better. Engine size, prefer 2 - 3 litre to allow for large miles and non frenzied acceleration with the expectation of reasonable consumption.

Cars I am considering are as follows
BMW E60 5 series, 525/530 petrol or diesel
Mercedes CLK, 320 cdi or similar petrol
Civic latest shape, 2.2 diesel or type R maybe (Never driven one, just a little attracted by style), perhaps too "plastic" for longevity?
Jaguar S type. I see lots of 2000ish 3.0 V6 cars for around 3-4k, are they as bad as prices suggest? Obviously can pay mroe, just looked attractive on paper.
Jaguar X type, any good?

Overall I am looking for something a little "executive" I suppose you could say, would like to get into the 30s easily enough on a run, trip to work is non stop dual carriageway for 30+ miles each way.

I know its a little vague, I am just looking for a little inspiration with reasons why I should choose something in particular. I have been very lucky with my overall driving costs for the last decade, would love to repeat it. So the chosen car shoud have the potential to last 10 years + with 12k miles a year roughly with the reasonable hope it wont completely fall apart in doing so.

So, what would you have me buy, and why....?

if your budget is 15k why are you looking at sub 5k jags? why not one closer to the top of the budget?

If you are interested in an S Type make sure it is post 2002, preferably post 2004.

It just caught my eye on pistonheads... 3k for an S type with 50-60k miles, surprised me. I am not looking for something to throw 15k away on if there are good cars with longevity available for less. Show me a low mileage exec car with full service history and lots of gimmicks with an expectation of lasting 10 years without major faults expected every ten minutes for £500 and I will buy it and leave £14.5k in the bank!! ;)

An S type is a good shout, just spend 6 or 7k on a facelift later than 2004 face lift 3 litre.

Superb car for the money.

Id have you rename the 15K "car fund" the "fuel fund" and make the GTO your daily drive, id do the same in your shoes (Prob worth mentioning I have a similar car as my daily drive so obviously biased towards the idea :P)

I have given that a little thought as well :D However, GTO remains a second car for wife to use on occasion when needed while I take main car to work. With the lowered suspension the ride can be a little jarring for long trip use when wife is in the car.
I need something comfy for trips away to family and commute use on a daily bases, but can follow your train of thought nonetheless :D
