Would it work? And any other suggestions? Could I get away with a cheaper mobo and still be able to crossfire later?

Don't bother looking at alternatives.

You've chosen a quality motherboard with none of the issues some others seem to have.

Probably wouldn't need 8GB RAM if you're just using it for gaming, so I guess you could make a saving and get 4GB, otherwise it looks pretty solid.

I'd change the cpu cooler to a cooler master 212, as that bolts to the board for a better fit than push pins

Ok, I'll go for that one then (for the sake of £4) but will I need thermal compound with it?

upto you really, the stuff supplied will do the job, mx4 might shave a few degress off as artic silver may.
