Galaxy S , A nice price now £249

I'd rate all new top of the range phones as 'mega dear'

Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it fails to offer good value however...

Mega dear = overpriced, around £450-500 is what all top end phones have cost over the last few years, its hardly a lot if you need the features.

I guess it just comes down to our personal interpretations of the term 'dear' then. For me dear just means expensive, however expensive doesn't necessarily mean overpriced, it just means i expect more of it.

They are overpriced, if they were not heavily subsidised across a 2 year contract no bugger would have one.

Considering they lose 1/2 their value in 6-12 months, i would rate their value up their with buying a console on release day and top shelf PC hardware.

Desirable but overpriced.

If you are happy to pay, that is all that matters. :)

It's the same with almost everything though, I don't consider them overpriced, but they certainly aren't cheap.

When you think the original GS was this sort of price and less than 1 year later you are getting a dual core, better screen, 1080p recording/playing and a far better phone out the box as we all know the gs suffered badly with the lag issue until the chaps at xda got around it with the lag fix.

Tbh, £250 for a phone is still a small fortune, all smartphones are dear. £500, now that's crazy money and I think you'd have to be slightly obsessed or mad to pay that for the SGS II when it comes out, I love my smartphones now but you can buy a decent gaming PC for £500...

Yes, it's all relative, but if you can drop half a grand on a phone, perhaps you're losing touch somewhat!

Depends your interests doesn't it, mate of mine has spent close too £480 on flight stuff now to me that's a total waist of money but to him it isn't.

i can't say he is losing touch or obsessed that is what he finds interesting, you could spend 1k on fishing stuff to others that's a waste of money.

I got another mate that has spent £800 on a Marine fishtank setup but again that is what he find interesting, just because some of us like new tech don't make us mad.

Indeed, but that's a manifestation of the fact that phones, or smartphones, aren't simply a device to communicate/surf the web etc anymore. They've become almost a hobby, like overclocking or whatever your particular vice might be!

The fact remains, £500 is a LOT of money for a phone.

people pay £500 here on GFX cards to play some shoddy console ports.

Its all relative

I'm probably going to get the iPhone 4 but the cheapest I have found it for Vodafone (my network) is £510. Yeah thats pretty expensive for a phone but I can afford it even if it is half my montly wage blown on it. Although it will probably be a bit of a PITA getting my contract transfered to one of those mini sim cards that the iPhone 4 uses.

edit: plus the fact I miss my iPod Touch that I sold because I didn't want to have two separate devices everywhere I went. You can spend about £180 on an iPod Touch and then spend about £300+ on a Smartphone, so why not just get the iPhone 4 or 3GS where it has it for all in one for around the same price or cheaper of you get the 3GS if you don't mind loosing out on the newer features or looks of the iPhone 4. So it all adds up at the end of the day if you think about it.

Hmmm that is a good price indeed.

My gf dropped my Galaxy S and cracked the screen, if it was anything more than the £100ish we've been getting quoted for a new screen i'd just sack it off and buy a brand new one but thats an excellent price for a top bit of kit!
