Life insurance

Where do you even start these days, just did a quick google and the amount of information is bombarding to say the least

i really have no idea what i'm looking for but the missus asked me to look into it.
Ideally want to be looking to cover things like funeral costs, accidental death possibly critical illness cover

Has anyone got any pointers for me on where to start.

I looked at a comparison site and one of the questions was "How long would you want the policy to last"... surely til I'm dead?

No - there are generally two types of life insurance: Whole life assurance which pays out only when you die, and Term insurance, which pays out only if you die before a certain age.
